My BIG Question

Ill put this here because I know you guys in this subforum are legit

Alright, as some of you have come to know, I am getting a new rig. While it may seem as easy as picking the components, its really not in my case. I am a 16 year old kid, and my dad said that since my current lappy (inspiron 9300) is bugging out, I can sell it, or take the xps m170 Dell is offering me as an upgrade FO FREE (or i can sell that one too). Another option is to get a computer from monarch and have them build it for me because he likes the warranty. The specs would be opty 165, dfi ultra d, 2gb ocz pc4000, ocz powerstream 520, xtrememusic xfi, 74 gig raptor, 7900gt, ect. I tried to convince him to let me build my own computer but he wouldnt budge. Finally, he gave in and said I could do it during the summer where it wont interfere with school (yeah, I know). I can probably let him let me do it during spring break though. So, this leads me to my question. With all the talk of conroe owning, should i just wait until then, or should I get this socket939 rig from monarch, or should I build this s939 rig during spring break. All is good and dandy if i wait for conroe all together, but would it just be better to get the opty rig and upgrade to quad core when it comes out? Im planning on keeping this rig for a while. So, what do you think i should do?

I was pretty much set on getting the rig from monarch as I have called them a bunch of times and worked it out. It was yesterday that he said I could build my rig during the summer. Now, I think that building it during spring break (2 weeks from now) will be the best option as I will have a "owning rig" for now, and I can just change the mobo, ram, when quad core comes out when I really "need" it. What do you think?

Thanks,
jcll2002

BTW, the rig at monarch is about the same as building it myself, the only difference is a $75 shipping fee (which may be the same as ordering everything seperately) and an $80 2 year warranty.

Build a rig during the summer? It takes a couple hours

I'd go for the 165 or wait for AM2 to come out.

Agreed. The first rig I built was when I was 15. It took me about an hour and a half. Now I can put a whole system together and be installing XP in 45 minutes.

I'd just build whatever you can afford now, no one likes to wait, and no matter what, there's always going to be something new coming out.

If you wait, you're going to be ecstatic for a month or so, and then something else is going to come out and you'll think to yourself "I should have waited longer".

Happens to me all the time. I buy stuff thinking its going to be the best for a while. Then a week later, something owns it hardcore.

Wait for DX 10, that's what I'd do.

Actually.. If I was in your position.. I'd probably take the m170.

It will still last a while, and for free.. Can't beat it.

I'd take the M170 if were you too

There will ALWAYS be something newer and better on the horizon. If you want a computer now then build it now (or during spring break). Hey, you can always just upgrade it later and sell the old parts on ebay, that way you can have a great computer today and a great computer 6 months from now for not much more cash.

I'd build it myself - it's far, far cheaper, and you get the satisfaction of having an individual machine that no one else has. Plus, if anything goes wrong, since you built it you should have gained enough knowledge and confidence that you can fix the problem.

I recently built my first PC, and really enjoyed the experience. I learnt a hell of a lot, and it was fun at the same time. It'll be sad to see it go when I sell it though.

Between buying a custom built and building my own, I would build it myself. Saves money and you learn.

But I think I would take that free M170 in a instant. If you don't like the M170 then sell it when you are ready to build your new desktop.

I'd wait a few weeks if you can, see if you can get and M1710.

But seriously dude, count yourself lucky- not only do my parents refuse to lend me money to buy a laptop, they also: Refuse to do me an ebay account so I can sell stuff, refuse to even consider me borrowing their credit cards to buy stuff even if presented with the cash, and hate laptops.
This teaches me alot about dealing on the sly, nudge nudge.

He was offered a a M170, not a M1710. If the M170 gets discontinued his free upgrade may be gone.

Which is why I added the modifier "If you can".

If you have a working lappie, get the desktop- self build one, if you can with 2 dual core opterons for quad core fun.

Otherwise m170.

Well if I were you I would take the M170 because even if you don't want it, you can get more for it than the 9300. So if you find out you want the desktop, then you can sell the M170 and get it.

O and I'm just curious as to what was wrong with your 9300? Why didn't they want to replace the parts?
