This is step by step How to make your own catalyst 6.3 acer version:
  1. download catalyst 6.3, extract to folder cat63
  2. extract acer driver to folder VGA
  3. copy file VGA\Driver\INSTALL.INI to cat63\Driver\INSTALL.INI, patch target file:

I can confirm that it works like a charm, thanks!
Yup, big thanks, worked for me as well.
I'm a little confused... What does this give one? Is it the original drivers plus the software from 6.3 (e.g., Avivo, ATI CCC)?
Thread Starter
It is the original ACER specific settings (INF file) plus the new driver files, both driver and utilities.
Nice... So, everything works correctly with this? PowerPlay and all that?

Thanks!

so far so good

Okay, I would call myself a relatively advanced user, and I am clueless on this one. ---, +++, and @@ means what? I'll admit, if I don't know what these refer to, I probably shouldn't be messing around, but I am curious.

Also, I found this on 3D Guru:

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1344

Basically it is Catalyst 6.3 release date 3/8/06 and it lists the x1600 as being supported by this release.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why ATI wouldn't have the x1600 being supported by 6.3? Seems odd to me that it would be one of their higher end products not able to handle the latest drivers...

I just don't want to mess anything up, and I am still not sure if it is better to try this than to apply the Omega Drivers. Is it?

thanks!
The x1600 is supported on the 6.3s, even the mobile version. You just need to manage to use mobilemod and you will be all set.

and i have no idea what is going on with the earlier posts either. all i got was installing the 6.3s basically to a file, install the acer ones from CD and overwrite the 6.3 INFs with the acer (never tried it, but i assume thats all it is)

its pretty simple (although if you not familiar with the syntax i can see the confusion), "---" means delete this line and replace with "+++" line

you have to copy the the two files over first and remane one of them, also they are read only, so change that before you edit (or you might not be able to save)

The x1600 is supported, the mobility x1600 is not. ATI wants you to get drivers from the OEM (acer in this case), but the latest are not available from acer.

btw - the 6.3 omegadrivers came out and they install on laptops so you might want to try those if you cant get the files patched
post #11 of 12
Shiggs, what are the BENEFITS of using this version? What is usable here that is otherwise not usable with the Cat 6.3s i have installed (non acer)

Does the Acer software provide some extra functionality?
TaY -

I like to use latest drivers, there not always better, but i still like to try.

The problem is, the official ATI drivers will not install due to some checks the driver install does (and some other stuff). So by replacing the files in question with Acer's and patching you disable the check and add the info needed to install properly.

You can use mobile mod to make the necessary changes, perform the steps outlined in this thread or install the omega drivers. I have tried omega and while i like not having the catalyst control center installed i found problems. Patched and tweaked drivers are ok if you are looking for a few extra FPS or some higher benches but for stability I prefer the official driver set.
