8890/8814 repair opinions needed

hey all,
I'm looking for repair opinions, so any ideas you have will be much appreciated!

PROBLEM:

Prostar 8814 (same as Sager 8890) will only run off of AC adapter. If there is a battery in the laptop, the battery light goes from green to orange constantly and I have tried a new battery but it immediately shuts off if I try to run on the battery only.

QUESTIONS:
  1. Any ideas as to the cause and is it user servicable?
  2. Approximately how much do you think it would cost to repair if I send it in?
  3. Should I send it to Prostar, Sager, PowerNotebooks, PCTorque, etc....?
  4. How long is the typical turn-around time for repairs?

THANKS FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE!

Your battery is dead.
I have three such items doing exactly what you describe
It would seem that the Li-ion cells are not that robust and only last 12-18 months at best.
You only have to purchase a new battery.

First, thanks very much for the reply...I was beginning to wonder if I had asked too hard of a question or something. I do appreaciate your help...
however I just did purchase a new battery to see if that was the problem. No difference at all with the new battery: laptop will not run at all without being plugged in.

So unless they sent me a defective battery I think it might be something else. I have 3 batteries for this laptop and it's the same with them all. One day they both worked, next day they didn't. So I bought a replacement and it didn't work either.

So I think I'm left with sending it in for repair.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where is the best place?

Thanks again!

Oh.
Given it is a Prostar I would send it to them.

On the issue of power, how do you connect your laptop to the power brick?
Do you plug the DC connector at the back of the laptop before or after you power the AC adaptor? I suggest plug in the DC connector with AC power switched off. Only turn on AC power once everything is connected. I learnt this the hard way from a much older RDI Britelite Sun IPX laptop which used to have the same problems you describe. It has to do with inrush currents and switch mode power supplies for high current devices such as the 8890.
