Advantages of ASUS over Thinkpad and Vaio...

Thread Starter
Hi, I'm new to these forums and am about to purchase a new laptop.

based on the specs, I've narrowed it down to vaio VGN SZ-140, Thinkpad X60, and ASUS W5F.

I'm going to need this computer for work primarily, which includes a lot of number/mathematics intensive work, and some moderate graphics. fast multi-tasking is a must-have, which is why I'm probably going to need a core-duo rather than a P-M.

what are the advantages of having an ASUS over a Vaio or a Thinkpad? I hear Sonys have the best screens and Thinkpads are the most durable/reliable and the best built. For an extra few hundred bucks for a W5F, I sure hope there are some.

Besides the fact that ASUS wins across the board [overall quality, performance, and look & feel]?
They're also the only brand the produces their own notebook from the ground up.
Everyone else [including IBM ], use ODM's to their work for them.
You can count on ASUS to always be consistent.

I'm not a 12" screen guy myself, but I briefly owned a Dell 500M (or whatever that was) and my 14" screen on my W3V is much more suited to what I'm doing. I looked at the Sony and decided against it because it didn't fit my hands. I don't want my palms resting on the edge of the laptop. The IBM has only external DVD/CDROM, right? I didn't like that, either. Just my 2 cents.

I'm looking at EXACTLY the same computers, and i'm leaning towards getting a Vaio SZ140 or something along those lines, since it's cheaper than the asus and has the sony brand as well as a better screen. It's a bit heavier though, but with a larger screen and better gfx card as well...

now i'm just trying to persuade myself to spend another 500 bucks for the premium model with carborn fibre casing and LED backlit display ))

im stuck too,

for me its between the asus w3j or sony sz

im loving the power of the asus but also loving the portability of the sony

worst thing is, is that which ever i pick, ill always be wondering whther i should have got the other one

how is the sony cheaper than the asus? if u configure the sony to almost the same specs as the asus the sony comes out at about $100 more and that's not including tax. also, no sony laptop has the graphics power to match the w3j's 256mb x1600. the only thing the sony has going for it is its size...and screen, but imo people are blowing the quality of sony screens WAY out of proportion.

I meant only branded notebook [ASUS Ensemble, not rebranded built-on, etc.] that does everything from the ground up...
