Alright, well glad I held off on that review.. surf was awesome, at 8PM (nighttime), my last ride of the day, I pulled into an overhead freighttrain of a barrel!!!! Just a deep black hole howling up behind me... I would trade my computer away to get another ride like that!

Anyway... here's the review, thus far. Let me kow if anything else is really needed...

Nice! Thank you very much for the review! I added a few comments and questions there, just to keep you away from surfing.

I want to be the first on your trade list!

My google must be broke then because I can't seam to find anyone posting about this great lappy. I've been happy with it for a month now and aside from a faulty mem card reader and bad ram upgrade its been gravy. You mention upgrades. How was that accomplished. I'd love to see the insides of this and a non soldered cpu so Merom could be a possibility.

You've changed the video card on a Toshiba notebook? Please give details as to what models and from what GPU you started and to what you ended with. Thanks

Purchase Help

Hey, Everyone. I'm new to the forums (at least posting I'm new). Been using it for a while now, and am finding it very helpful. I'm an incoming Freshmen at University of Illinois and I've got my heart set on the P105. I'm a cautious buyer, though. So I was wondering if anyone here knows of a good site or store to buy the P105 from? The Toshibadirect.com doesnt sell the laptop, only tells you "How to Buy" and gives you a few sites to check. I've noticed some sites sell the notebook for cheaper (of course theres some rebates and that stuff) but I'm not sure whats shady and whats not. I can't find student discounts on other sites either, if their are even any. I'm sure many people here are experts on where and how to buy notebooks. So thats my first request.

My second request (or rather a question) is: if I buy the P105 from another site besides Toshiba (which isnt even "selling" it), will I still be able to purchase the Toshiba Extended Warrenty Plans (particularly the System Guard 4 year one)? Or, are there better plans out there that arent more expensive than the Toshiba ones? I want the computer to be able to last my entire college career (and possibly more).

My final question is kind of odd and possible stupid =). And I know i won't get a difinitive answer, but at least some input from others will put my mind at ease a little. Since the price is so amazingly low for such an amazing notebook, I'm worried that maybe it might go off the market or the price might boost up. Anyone find this worry of mine plausible? Should I take my time in finding a good price, or is my time most likely limited for such a price it's at now?

Thank you all ahead of time for the help. Anything at all will be greatly appreciated: advice, sites, accessories, etc. Thanks agian.

Dabbott,

I got mine from Micro Center retail but they do have an online store. Buy it now and personally I thnk it's priced very low for what you're getting when compared to a Dell or one of the boutique retailers. I purchased Micro Center's extended service plan.

Thanks for the reply. I'm still shopping around for good prices. I called and found out that Toshiba doesn't have a student discount. Which sucks.

i didn’t change hardware i used utilities to unlock pipes and clock the vid card up, remove pwr management settings from hd for higher performance and a few other optimizations I saw someone oc their 7900gs to the 7900gtx and after faster then the gtx’s benchmarked speeds the laptop has a lot of potential it just needs to be unleashed the only real thing that needs to be eventually changes is the hard drive, I only keep it for the speed but if I could find a comparable drive with faster rotational speed id switch in a heartbeat (my t43p’s 5400 rpm drive was faster then this one) but the storage does rock, it truly is a perfect computer, if anyone would like to know what exactly I did to the computer let me know and ill give full details on it

Specs typically vary from country to country even within a model line. It doesn't surprise me that Toshiba offers one ithing in NZ/Australia and another int he US and another in Canada. It happens all the time.

but doesnt 512mb 7900gs make pretty good difference than the 256 one which is what i have seen on any other place, i mean toshiba US etc. and even nvidia site doesnt show any info on each specific model like the 7900gt and 7900gs, they just show for 7900GTX.

it's not a mistake the laptop got different specs in other countries , in europe there are some countries selling it with a 2ghz core duo ,1gig 533mhz memory and the 512mb 7900gs and 120gb 5400rpm hd and higher res screen.
also the US model doesn't have bluetooth

i also wondered about the 512mb ram on the card , normally though in gfx card in general the amount of ram doesn't affect performance much , but it can't hurt that's for sure ^^ it can be used for big textures

Toshiba p105-S291 usa

this notebook is a beast in disguise.Performance wise it can take every game i can throw at it and more.

pros: Core-duo,7900,160g HD,very light weight and cool to the touch after 12 hours of gaming,ddr2-667(Elpidia)

cons:4200rpm HD,acess times/load time are slow for some games and read and right times are slow for media apps

All in all it was definitly worth the money spent, and i have 3 friends who also purchased this notebook and are very pleased with it.Toshiba offers, after registration of the product, 1-4 years of protection plans for those who know they are going to need it.

There are 3 thing you will need to do before you plan on using it.
1. Register your product with Toshiba
2. REMOVE ALL ADWARE (which Toshiba willing provides it to you)
3.ADD more memory. There is a huge performance increase from the 1024(512x2)ddr2-667, to 2048(1024x2)$65-80 per dimm, WHICH IS VERY CHEAP COMPAERED TO max MEMORY OF 4096(2048X2)>(CAUSE RIGHT NOW ONLY 2 COMPANIES PRODUCE THOSE DIMMS FOR RETAIL..Crucial>$1800, and Kingston Tech>$1500 per dimm.

links for memory

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231069

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820208037

i have used all three of these companies for memory in the 3 Toshiba P105-S291,all have 2048(1024x2)
