Acer 8204 + Omegadrivers 6.3

Thread Starter
Hi All,

since I did the Bios Update to 3309 from Acer my X1600 is only recognized as a M56 which is the internal name for the X1600.

When I installed the Omega-Drivers 6.2 after the Bios-Update I got the M56 as "name" for my graphics adaptor which wouldn´t be a problem until I would like to deep dive into overclocking.

Anyone else has this experience and a possible workaround?

Right now it seems that the new Catalyst 6.3 brings up some more performance in gaming like in BF2 and Half-Life but still poor performance (Even with the Dual-Core Update) at COD2.

Would be great to get a reply asap.

Thanks,

Michael

My COD2 performance has been great; I don't have a framerate for you but it plays far better & smoother than COD1 did on a Dell XPS w/ Radeon 9800. I've got things pretty much maxed out on Doom4 and it plays "like butter" as well... so I haven't even looked into overclocking - no need.

One thing you should definitely do is update to the 3311 BIOS...

Maybe a stupid question, but do ya get the buzz in the games??

137 no offense but I've never seen anybody so paranoid about a little sound coming from a computer! But to answer your question no I have no buzz under any use to which I have put my machine; the only thing I hear in a dead silent room is the slight whoosh of the fan and a tiny gurgle from the hard drive when it's active. Chill, buddy, you're going to give yourself an aneurism!

Thanks Whug... actually I might see paranoid, but here in the Europe the thing is worht like 3000 USD and I have struggled with very annoying and unidentified buzzing from the motherboard of my 8104 for whole previous 13 months and ACER never could solve it. There for I am trying - you completely right - I am figuring out from the experience of guys here how to eliminate the chance of getting buzzing notebook, cause that would really make said to get a buzzing nosie just because of not being patient or not doing some research before...I also would like to thank to all the great folks who are sharing the issues with us and the progress of theit soultion!

cheers

Hey, 137! I can certainly understand wanting to get a good machine, but I wonder if your "database" so to speak can possibly be wide & deep enough to give you a meaningful result? Most people, problems or not, don't find their way to these boards, and if the buzz is in any way a random issue you could spend months researching it and still get a bad one the very next day.

My advice would be to buy from a place that offers a 100% return no-questions-asked policy. Here in the US many states have very strong consumer protection laws, anti-lemon laws, etc. and it might pay you to know your rights in that regard before you buy. You maybe can't buy from the cheapest dealer if you want good support, but I find buying from people who stand behind their goods is the best value in the long run anyway.

Good luck to you!

Thanks Tallan,

I mean, my database cant be wide enough, surely not. But from what I read, there is majority of people owning 06/03 batch who more less do not suffer from most of the mentioned problems. That said, I can claim this batch and just reduce the chance of getting me a fulty one. It is possiblr here, I just did it. I am in the central Europe and you almost cant find 100% no-asking return policy in my countr However you can have the product demonstrated before purchase, so I would go this way. Actually now I am waiting until the unit arrives, it takes days and days. Because I am on my third piece I really am running ouyt of resellers anyway but I really just want to have non-issue machine.

Well the biggest thing is the price here. It is over 3000 USD, so I think I have all the right to be as picky as possible...

Just got my 8204. Its the 602 build, and I hear no buzz from the graphicscard while running the demoes or 3d mark. The screen is also great. There is a slight colour difference in the right corner, but you realy have to look hard to notice it.

I have made a small 3dmark 05 test here:

Original Acer Install: 4164
Original Acer Install (bios 3312): 4250

Clean Install - Omega Driver: 4355

SuperPi with original install (2M): 1.17
SuperPi with clean install: 1.16

The new bios seems to perform better, and the omega driver works great! Powersaving and everything.

So far a great computer!

I have 4502 3DMarks with new Omega drivers and 3312 BIOS, but I noticed strange thing: when I look closer at shadows (pure black screen in games or black background in movies) I can see something like "noise" - black isn't pure black, it's made of black and dark grey pixels. I have never noticed it with original Catalyst 6.2 drivers. There is no noise in black screen when Windows are starting up, but then it goes completely black for a second and I can see the noise! It looks like there is a noise since the driver starts working. Is there anybody with the same problem?
