This isn't strictly speaking a laptop problem, rather a pc...
My father had serious problems setting up his broadband connection using a first a BT voyager 100 and then a speedtouch modem for AOL. Eventually, after doing some rigorous cleaning and some use of CCleaner, I managed to get everything working fine. At that point the pc was plugged into a standard Dell roller mouse and a cheap PS/2 keyboard- but like i say, everything was working fine.
Went in to shop today and switched to his usual rig- wireless mouse and keyboard. Mouse worked, keyboard didn't. Tried plugging in ps 2 keyboard- no luck. I stupidly told him to remove the drivers for the wireless and plug in the PS2 mouse and keyboard. Not surprisingly, this left him without any kind of input. Remembered that rebooting usually helps PS2 devices.
Sure enough, the hardware loads and detects the mouse for sure- but when he tried opening word, the mouse froze- still no keyboard. Told him to reboot and press F8 to try 'last known good config.' Obviously, the keyboard was working at that stage since he was able to do that- Windows XP booted into last known good config no problems. Message came up saying new hardware had been detected and installed- please reboot. Dad did so- on reboot, everything seemed fine- Tried going into Word to test- and same problem! Mouse freezes after Word opens and keyboard doesn't work at all!
Any suggestions? It sounds like a software issue to me. Would repairing the XP installation do the trick, or should we simply invest in a USB plug and play mouse and keyboard?
Please help!
