XPS M170 Adding or replacing a Hard drive

Thread Starter
Hello,

I was hoping some of you folks could help me out. I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to computers. I recently purcahsed a dell M170 but the hard drive I ordered with it was only 60 gigs.

I would like to upgrade this asap. I had a few questions I was hoping someone could answer for me.

1. Is it possible to add a second hard drive to the m170 without removing the old one. If so. What type of hard drive do I need to buy.

2. If its a matter of just replacing the hard drive. What type of hard drive do I need to buy and would it void my warranty.

Thank you

1) Yes, you can add an "external" hard drive to it.

2) If you want to replace the internal hard drive without voiding your warranty, dell told me to use OEM parts. Go on ebay and search dell xps hard drive and a few should pop up.

I was under the impression that any part that Dell considers "user Replacable" doesn't void the warranty. Course every Dell rep seems to have a different answer to qustions such as this.

Yeah, i was saying dell will warranty the hard drive that he puts in if it is a dell OEM HD. but if it is like a hitachi that wont void warrenty on the entire notebook, just the hard drive.

dell buys whatever parts are cheapest as long as you don't throw in an IBM or other retailers drive ie toshiba, HP, Compaq then you are fine they just want an original manufacturers drive

Actually if you buy the drive from Dell as a bare drive they won't warranty it. You have to go back to the manufacturer. But installing a drive wouldn't void the warranty on the rest of the machine.

if you are using OEM parts off ebay or something, assuming you are not telling them you replaced the drive, they cant tell the difference

Use the Advanced Search function under this section of the forum for "2nd hard drive". You'll see a long thread that explains what to do. You can get an IBM UltraSlim Hard Drive Caddy to replace your CD/DVD drive with a 2nd hard drive.

Hmmm, whenever I send it back to Dell, they never ask for the hard drive, so I never tell them I replaced it, and have about $60,000 in software/programs/movies/music, you get the idea...

I'll put a pic by pic on how to do it later tonight

If only cars worked like our laptops.

"I replaced the radio head unit and all the speakers."

"That's okay, but we can't cover those."

"Okay - they've got warranties of their own."

In real life, however...

"I put an antenna topper on my car."

"HAHAHAHA, YOU'VE MODIFIED IT FROM STOCK, VOIDVOIDVOID!!!!"

Alright, maybe a SLIGHT exaggeration....but still.

I would NOT suggest buying a Harddrive on Dell's website. All you need is any 2.5 inch notebook harddrive that's SATA for the M170 And it'll work just fine. Now if you want a suggestion on a good Haddrive to get, I'd highly suggest the Hitachi 7k100 100 GB harddrive that's 72,000 RPMS, on Ebay you can get it for like 160 dollars or so. If you buy NEW I don't really see a problem. Plus alot of these Harddrives have Manufacture Warranties that come with them.

i have on-site 7/24 and all the techs that have worked on it couldn't care less that i've modded it or replaced something...

speaking of HDD's, i just had my 7.2k60 crash two weeks ago... i was more than satisfied with how quickly Dell responded and what they sent me hehe

Is that something they changed with the M170 then? 'Cos I have a Gen 2, and it's definitely only ATA.

No it's ATA, lol I messed that up when I was typing, sorry bout that. Here's a Link the HDD I personally bought for my laptop http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=6840160004

Where is this, exactly? Apologies, but searching didn't lead me to a clear result in this forum... A link would be greatly appreciated. I never use a CD drive and have an external sitting around; yeah...

or you can purchase a "drive enclosure" and any ide drive, which will connect via usb or firewire.

it's a cheap solution.

Already have it, that's not what I want. I have no use for a CD drive and would like to carry my drive built into the XPS, no cords or whatnot.
