How to replace a hard drive with a VAIO VGN-SZ140P

Hi there-

Just got a brand new VAIO VGN-SZ140P and immediately ready to take the 100 gb 5400 rpm hard drive and replace it with a 100gb Travelstar 7200 RPM hard drive. Have had no luck with Sony getting a schematic and have already removed the screws attached to the keyboard attempting to lift the keyboard up and out like my old VAIO. Does anyone have any experience with this. I don't want to break the casing already .

Thanks,
Ej

Maybe this will help.

This Is It!

Excellent work! Thanks for your help. Not that it matters, but for those of you interested; yes, this is the valid way of dismantling the SZ series to get to the hard drive. The site listed above is the equivalent of what you would get if Sony actually did their job and gave us the information we paid for.

How Does the Keyboard Come Off?

The pictures of the disassembly are great, but how does the keyboard come off? Does it easily lift off, or do you have to use force?

Keyboard Removal...

Ahhh yes, the keyboard removal....

First remove the middle screw that is most central on the backside of the unit. Flip it over and use a flat head to gently remove the keyboard. Only try to remove it from the top of the board. There are three black snap blocks that the board must me pulled over. It will take a bit of force, but be careful not to bend the board. Apply equal force on the entire top side. After the tops are pulled up, pull towards the monitor and the keyboard will slide out. DON'T PULL TOO HARD or you will tear the ribbon that is attached to the motherboard.

That's all I can tell you. Happily using my Vaio now with a faster Hitachi Hard Drive.

Thanks for this link, that site just saved my 160P/C from an unfortunately Gatorade accident.

For what it's worth, the keyboard removal on the 160 is actually only two points of contact (exactly as shown in the above link's images) and the nubs can be pushed in so the keyboard pulls out without undue tension or the risk of breaking off the nubs.

Did you buy an 2,5" Hitachi 7200 Sata Version or ATA Version? Or it's 1,8" Version?

Did you change DDR2 too? How did you do?

Thanks

SZ series uses SATA 2.5" drives, the ATA drives will not work unless you somehow get a new data cable that fits.

As for the DDR2 ram modules, those are on the underside of the SZ, so you can access and change those without taking apart the laptop.
