m6811 bios upgrade????

Thread Starter
i see here: eMachines Resource Portal v2.0

that the lastest Bios for the m6811 is the 0F08.P00, but my m6811 has the NSF03.po Bios.

Is it a good idea to update to the 0F08.P00 or should i just play it safe and stick to the one i have??

I'm having some issues where the machine randomly just shuts down after the CPU fan revs up really really fast.

this a known issue?? i know the back light flickering is a known issue!

Thanks

I would keep the same BIOS just in case. I am not sure which one is newer, or if your motherboard/BIOS is the same. I thought the 0F's can't be mixed with the NS', I am not sure though.

As for the random shut downs see this:

if you have an NS board, you have to use the NS BIOSes.

the update on teh eMachines site contains flashes for the BIOSes of both boards, it automatically detects which board is there and updates with the proper BIOS. the flash is 0F08 for the 0F boards, and NSF04 for the NS boards. so you can download that and update to NSF04:

Just an update on the bios thingy :-)
Well, i did take a plunge and upgrade my 0F08.P00 to 0F09.P00
The 0F09 stemmed from Targa 811x. It boasted system stability in 3D applications and improvement/stability of ACPI.
1. Result:
BIG improvement in games, my CoD, CoD2 and AE2 fly!
my lappy is a bit quieter
XP seems to zip along with no hiccups
battery seems to last longer - still have not measure the extra performance yet
2. Bios upgrade and flash is straight forward using the instruction from the Targa web site
3. Side EFFECTS - READ!
a. system will boot with TARGA sign and NOT the "E"
b. XP will force u to RE-activate the software
c. if u use AVG, be ready to re-install or repair it
d. F2 to get into set up and not DEL

Have run through Sandra, Systool for verification et all ...
i am a happy camper so far, other than with the funny Targa sign at post :-)

cheers ...

ghn,
I am very interested in trying this bios but am having problems getting the image from targa to boot correctly. Which software are you using to convert it or is there a winflash available?
TIA,
Chuck

i do not even see the targa screen anymore at post after i expand the bios to show diagnostic at post. System running VERY stable and quiet.

1. http://www.service.targa.co.uk/ - model finder=mobile pcs, then roll down to look for targa VISIONARY 811a - click on download tab - there u will see bios 0f09 update - file to p.u. =
Bios_Visionary_811_0F09.zip (3821.3 Kbyte 23.02.2005) - readme.txt explains EXACTLY what to do

2. it is STRAIGHT forward when following the instruction, i follow the instruction, burn the image, using nero, to a CD, boot and then just follow the instructions. the rom file and the flash utility are ALL being included, so no need to run about looking for any flash tool.

3. on the german site - www.service.targa.de - if u p.u. (Anleitung_BIOS-Update811.pdf (930.4 Kbyte 23.02.2005) - this is a pdf file with screen shots, step by step as what to expect. I recommend reading this too.

4. regarding 0F09 for eMachines, i m surprised that they do not rls it, but seems that hearing over the grapevine, it is being included in the newest Bios update for the 74xx machine.

cheers ...

Hey,
Thanks for the reply. I actually just finished the update and everything seems to be working fine. I needed to download nero and everything worked. By the way this is on an emac m6810. Later and thanks for the info!

according to bulletin/info on the targa site this 0F09.P00 boasts system stability in 3D applications and improvement/stability of ACPI.

got to say that i m ok so far with the random-shut-off that plagues some (many) members. I had it twice - one was due to the fact that i did not lock my battery down; second was after 1 1/2 year of use. I took the machine top apart and clean the heck out of dust (dirt) and reseat the heatsink. No more issue since then, knock on wood!

i experience a few more shut off this past month, but that was due to the fact that i was playing with different ram modules, trying to push the 1gb pc3200 on the m6805. In these instances, just before the shut off, the fan would race up real loud and then shut itself down. Needsless to say, i had to swap the ram module :-)

cheers ...

I have been using using linux on my 6805 for a week and I have not once had the random shutdown since I installed it. This is usually a "several times a day" happening with Windows. In linux, Powersave is disabled and ACPI is enabled. I am not sure how to modify those options in Windows. Maybe it has something to do with those? I have run been running on battery and power cord.

desktop properties -> screen saver -> power
there u can choose "home office desk", so kinda "power management off"

cheers ...

Going to try this tonight on my m6810. For those worried about using this bios on their m68xx as it's not released by emachines, dont. "If" Emachines even bothers to release this bios the ONLY difference between the Targa and a Emachine bios is going to be the splash screen on boot up (which can be disabled). The only reason I would be hesitant is if your laptop is still under factory warranty and even then, should you need to send it in for service, you could simply reflash to the old one.

If you m68xx has a 0F0x bios, this bios was meant for you. Emachine or Targa, it's the same exact same motherboard.
