Got the game last night. I loved the originals. This is just fantastic!!!

I'd never played the originals. Bought Morrowind and received it a few months ago. Installed it on my 8790 and fired it up. So here's my guy standing below decks in a ship. Couldn't figure out the controls easily and after a bout o' gettin' frustrated w/ the dated graphics (never saw outside the first room, so don't know if they got better) and the controls, I gave up.

I hear gobs of good about Oblivion now that it's out. Does one need to have played the originals to enjoy Oblivion? I can't imagine making myself brave Morrowind again because it just seems like a pile of steaming crapola (know it's probably not since everyone loved it). Ready to try Oblivion, though, since it seems like I haven't heard a bad thing about it yet..

I didn't play the first one at all, and Oblivion can be enjoyed still. It is a very visually pleasing game, and fun as well. But, there are times when things get tedious like in most rpgs.
I think I will continue to chug away at playing FFXII for now.
But, I would reccomend Oblivion. It really is a fun game.

yeah.... the GPU in the 5320 slows down a little bit when there is action on medium... but its still very playable. Pretty sweet game too

I'm going to be getting this game very soon, I can't wait.

Hey kitty, check out my new thread on stable overclocking.
How do you get you machine to run oc'd without crashing?
I've read ALL the past threads. Maybe I'm missing something.
Doom 3 @ 430/1100=crash
WTF?

Spent 6 hours in the ER with my mom today (she had to get an IV, her blood pressure was 74/39 when she went to the doctor today). So while she slept I played Oblivion for 4 hours or so and my temp never went over 82. So I'm feeling better. My lap kept the fans clear so things ran cooler, my legs sort of straddled the beast.

I did see a bit of lag when I fought 4 mountain lions at once, but that was the only time.

That is really strange. It must just be a bad driver or something weird with the game. I have 3dmarked (2005) my gpu with 470/1.25 and it is fine, but I get some wierd game issues. I keep mine now at 460/1.1 and everything is great.
I would just try to reinstall the drivers.

Thanks all, she's in her bed sleeping so I'm playing eq2 just down the hall in my room (at temps of 76 - 86, but that's ok, I've been told over and over =).

Not all chips are created equally. It's all luck of the draw, so just cause one person got a huge overclock with their card doesn't mean you will. Looks like you got the short end of the stick in terms of overclocking capabilities.

You don't have to have played previous games, but their overall style is similar so you'll be up and running faster if you're used to playing this type of game.

Unlike most RPG type games, the Elder Scrolls series is completely open-ended. You can do whatever you want, and you don't even have to follow the main storyline if you really don't want to. That said, Oblivion seems to be slightly more story driven than Morrowind was from what I've seen of it so far.

These games can be really daunting when you're first starting out because if you're a typical gamer, you're used to the conundrum where if you don't do everything you can in a certain area, you won't be able to come back and do it later. Elder Scrolls isn't like that. So you may find yourself in situations where there are a ton of things you could be doing and it's difficult to choose. Don't worry about doing everything at once...just pick something you want to do and go for it, you can always come back and do the other stuff later.

The controls for the most part are basic FPS fare, though by default in oblivion, F is jump and space is the action button. I just swapped the two for familiarity.

I installed Oblivion a couple of days ago and I can't seem to get it to run properly on my 9880 (nVidia 6800 ultra), with a 3.6 P4 and 2gb RAM. Here's what I tried so far:

Defraggged HD,
Reduced the render ahead frame rate from 3 to 0 (using Coolbits),
Turned off HDR, bloom, and AA.
Reduced res to 1024 x 768,
Set the iPreloadSizeLimit from 26214400 to 100000000 and iThreads from 3 to 10 (in the ini file).

All the above tweaks I found at the forums of elderscrolls.com. But I'm still having problems with lock ups and slow frame rates, so much so that the game is basically unplayable. My fans are clean and I have plenty of airflow, playing in a room that's 68 f.

Is anyone else having similar problems?

What version of Nvidia drivers are you using? I think Nvidia made 84.25 with improvements for Oblivion players.
