Which one???

Thread Starter
I'm considering buying an Alienware for mostly gaming and some programming, but I can't decide which one to get. Here is what I would like to have...

Laptop
Leaning towards the 15.4 as opposed to the 16.1. Any drawbacks to the 15.4?
I want the fastest chip I can get for gaming... would that be the 3.2?
How long from order to delivery?
Definitely want the ati 128MB 9600.
How is the build quality and keyboard? For programming, the keyboard is very important to me. For gaming, I'll probably use an external mouse so the keyboard becomes less of an issue.

Thoughts and opinions appreciated.

Only 2 points: If you're going to go all out, go all out.. the screens are the same width, the 15" is squashed vertically. If you're spending that much money, get the larger screen you'll be happier in the long run.

I'm a programmer, the only thing I'm concerned about is the fn key in the bottom left hand corner. that's where the ctrl key is supposed to be dammit!

Basically, what I've read about the 15.4 is that is has an OK refresh rate (seen 25 and 35 ms times), which is certainly better than the 16.1's.

In terms of fastest chip, there is the extreme edition out that you can get in some Sager's (depends on the reseller)... That is the fastest type of chip out, to my knowledge from Intel. I have read some good reviews about AMD Athlon's FX, though, too. but on Alienware, the 3.2 would certainly be the fastest currently.

From order to delivery it is ranging. I have been in this forum for about a month now. It seems that people generally get their laptops in about a month from the order date. However, that could very well change because it isn't the Christmas season anymore. Alienware may gradually move toward the 15 day estimation they once had.

Good choice on the ATI 9600.. The 9700 should be coming out soon.. I've seen some estimations of February for their implementation.

The build quality, also from what I've read, is top notch. The interior chassis is a magnesium alloy. It isn't cheaply made.

in terms of the keyboard, take a look at some of the pictures some of the people have on their reviews in this forum. The only complaint that most have is the ctrl key is too small.

Hope this helps.

***Edit: The 15.4 is widescreen which will also benefit you because you will have slightly more area to work with, if I'm not mistaken. The low down: the 15.4 is widescreen and has a pretty good refresh rate. The 16.1 is fullscreen and slightly bigger... Inevitably, it isn't a matter of going all out, it's a matter of personal preference. It's very subjective.

1) no real draw bag wit the 15.4 other than the fact you cant only get the silver case.... but both screens are pretty good, the 15.4 has a faster refresh rate so i guess thats mroe of a bonus.

2) 3.2 is obviously the fastest you can get however some have argued you wont notice any difference in gaming form the 3.0 to the 3.2, id have to agree.

3) Delivery tiem is anyones guess, id say at leats 30 days, if you are financing you can tack on 5-10 days for hte paperwork to eb mailed back and forht so be patient.

4) ATI is the onyl card they offer at the moment so you have no choice there but that is still an excellent card, i chose itover the nvidia when you still had a choice.

5) not sure on the keyboard caus ei havent gotten mine yet but you can get an external keybopard from them and use that if need be.
