Does the m170 use regular IDE or SATA for its HD?

Wow Buy Dot Com is actually cheaper than Newegg! Never thought I would see the day :-)

Someone should inform Newegg.

I'll wait till 199, till then, I'm selling the 100GB and getting a 120GB.

anyone know the difference between SATA and IDE in our laptops? Any huge improvement?

$299 is FAR from cheap. I just bought a 3.5" 300gig Segate HD [7200 RPM, 16mb buffer] from the local CompUSA for $99 after rebate. That went in a $40 external drive case and it's running like a champ. Connecting via either USB or Firewire I'm getting excellent transfer rates.

Would love to have a larger 2.5" inside the 9300... but not till the prices drop and speeds go up.

What I dont understand is why they dont have variable speed laptop harddrives.

I want a 10,000RPM harddrive that will load my BF2 maps quickly, but then I have no problem at ALL with it spinning down to 5400RPM while Im not using it. Indeed, same with just browsing the web, I dont need a 10K HDD spinning and generating heat to run Firefox...But sometimes, I just sit and WAIT and WAIT and WAIT for this damn littel thing to transfer files.....

A 5400rpm Perpendicular Drive can read/write data at similar speeds to 7200rpm Traditional Drives. Because of the arrangement of the data, they have the speed of 7200rpm drives, and the power draw of 4200rpm drives. Perpendicular for the win! =)

ok newegg already has perpendicular drives. i made a thread about this about 2 months ago. second, there are 10k laptop drives. they are used in servers that really need to keep cool. they are pretty quiet but kinda hot for laptop drive. plus they are a little to thick to fit in most laptops.

They're not laptop drives at all - they're 1U-optimized drives, and they use an FCA 80-pin U320 interface.

i remember when you all bought a 60gb 7200 for 350.00 now its about 125.00

Like I said, I'm not upgrading my 80GB until at least a 7200rpm 160GB comes out. 20-40GB extra isn't worth it.

I just hope the Seagate/Maxtor merger speeds up, I've got Partner access to both and Maxtor has a pretty sweet "test drive" program.
