8104 / 8204
I took the laptop plunge last year (bought an 8104) after finally getting the "build your own desktop" bug out of my system. For years I built and upgraded my own PCs as A. A hobby I enjoyed and, B. A way to cut costs and get a killer system for less.
My decision to switch over to the laptop world was driven by the fact that trying to "keep up" with the latest and greatest was silly, given how quickly faster systems / upgrades came to market. Luckily for me ACER provided the means, less expensively, to get a decent laptop that would game, edit video, etc., etc. and be viable for a greater period of time. Since my purchase of the 8104 I upgraded it to 2 Gb RAM and bought the 8204 last week. I still have a decent desktop, that I built, that my daughter is using, my wife gets the 8104. Even after almost a year it STILL kicks serious tail and the 8204 is all the more better, what a machine! I stripped all the ACER junk off of it and reinstalled my own copy of windows XP Pro and the drivers from the ACER America site. NO PROBLEMS, everything operates as it should. There is a little light leakage from the LCD but I can live with that.
I looked at many different systems before going with ACER, their features to cost ratio in a laptop at this form factor is impossible to beat. Others come close, but you wind up making trade-offs. As in any reviewed product, the complaint department will usually get more notice than when things are OK. People are just more apt to post a complaint than a praise! I have NO regrets with ACER!!!
