MP3 Services

Is there a legal mp3 service that provides high-quality mp3's, doesn't require you to be a member, provides it in mp3 format, does not require a specific player, and let's you keep the songs forever?

I want to start building up my library, but Napster requires you to have their program installed to listen to it, iTunes restricts their files to AAC, and Rhapsody is from RealNetworks, which I despise - lord knows what the requirements are for even playing the files.

Basically I want to download some songs, store them on my external hard drive, and take them with me to just play on another computer via WMP or burn to a CD. What service will let me do that?

I highly doubt there is a legal mp3 downloading service. The reason iTunes and all other related services have their special format is to prevent copyright infringement. There is a way to convert out of the iTunes AAC format. Its called the Hymm Project. http://www.hymn-project.org/

So far, there has not been a challenge to www.allofmp3.com. It's based in russia, and you pay something like 1 cent/MB. Again, it probably doesn't pay American artists, but then again, it hasn't been questioned. You can even choose the bit rate that you want to download in.
