Upgradeable Graphics - Page 2

maybe toshiba should offer "upgraded motherboards" to fit in the laptop chasis (with upgradeable cpu & gpu.... (or am I living a fantacy world)
Yes you are. Most manufacturers dont want you to upgrade with parts, they want you to buy a new machine
post #23 of 45
People have been asking for upgaradable parts (like the motherboard) in laptops for years. Bottom line is that it just is not going to happen for at least quite some time. The R&D behind doing that is too costly, especially in a fast paced industry like this where one of the main goals is driving cost down for end users while the companies try to make a profit. Think about all that is involved in designing a chassis with all the right ports in all the right places, the cooling system and so on. Then trying to use that same chassis year after year, despite the implementation of newer technology that uses different ports etc, but making a new motherbard with newer technology that will fit into this aging chassis.

i agree (with saugen/g00nter)... but I was just thinking if they continue to do what they do... (with thier chasis&boards) .. just make the GPU and GPU removeable on all laptops.... I mean it doesn't cost "that much" to make a GPU chip in a socket... well we're still in infancy of technology....and also they don't want you to upgrade they want you to buy a new system , simply put (like saugen said)... I guess well because laptops cost more to produce than desktops...

Oh well that blows, I was just about to start a thread on upgradable graphic cards and i saw yours on the top, lol what a coincidence, anyway that seriously blows that you cant upgrade laptop graphics. . . I mean you pay like 2 grand for a gaming laptop but you go out and upgrade the memory and keep the processor becaues its fine and you want to upgrade the GPU and. . . your screwed, lol thats why i will only spend my money upgrading desktops, lol nice thread too!

Well, actually there is a small chance to upgrade some of the latest Toshiba laptops.
The P100 and the A100(or A105) have both MXM-like cards. If future models will have the same form factor, it will be possible to upgrade the vga, at least in theory.

thats the theory, but in practice its a bit more complicated than just the same form factor... you would also need a bios that recognizes the card you are attempting to use properly and a sufficient powersupply for the new hardware. both of which are still solely in the hands of the manufacturer and things you wont easily be able to change out on your own even if you are able to get a card that will fit.

however i will be updating my first post in this thread to reflect those machines status since it is important to remain up to date.

that slot is not for graphics at all... the best you can do with a pcmcia slot is to add various other accessories such as soundcards, firewire cards, as well as many other expansions.

thanks for the tip!

im sure this has changed abit in the year(ish) that this was 1st posted ...
What changed?????
ok maybe things have changed just a "little" since this post then again maybe I am just being optomistic. before I get yelled at I bought this comp knowing the graphics weren't great and I'm not a huge PC gamer but it would be nice to be able to do something other than watch DVD's when traveling. I was hoping someone could give me an interpretation of this: Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950, Benefits to Consumers, Upgradeability¹, Expand your view across two monitors for more workspace. Option requires Advanced Digital Display 2 (ADD) card for additional display connectors. PCI Express* x16 port available¹ to upgrade to higher performance graphics card if required for extreme gaming.

Sorry,l dont know much about that

Has the graphics card issue for Toshibas changed since 3/2006? I have a Satellite M65-S809 and it came with the Intel GMA 900. I understand that latter versions of Toshiba came out with updated versions of this chip, the 950 for example and more recently, the GMA X3100. I thought that I read somewhere that these chips were upgradable if the BIOS supported them but I'm not sure. Anyone have any info on this? I guess that the next question would be that if doable, where could you buy the chip? Thanks.

toshiba has some upgradablity within a series if your willing to do it yourself
ie if you have a
p105 - 6004 (mine)
with specs
Intel® Core™ Solo ProcessorT1300,
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950

you can replace with a mainboard from a
P105-S9722
with specs
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7200,
NVIDIA® GeForce Go 7900 GS 256MB GDDR3 SDRAM VRAM,

so for the most part within a series there is sort of an upgrade path
and thats probley the best we'll get for now

There is actually other Toshibas with removable GPU module.

The Satellite M50 (I have one here dismantled) has a removable X600SE graphics module underneath the board, this is a PCI-E.

I discovered this, because this machine will not boot, and there is no display at all. I dismantled it, removed the video module, and now the machine boots, but of course I see nothing. I am currently considering to buy a new video module from some part suppliers, to repair it.

I can even take pictures of this module if no one believes me :-)

here goes

I have a m50, which had a graphix failure with an X600 256hypermemory chip.
It was not a total failure but colour reproduction was half okay and half screwed and you all can imagine patches of colour cone wrong and stuff like that.

Sent it for repair.

Came out working well.

So did they change just the graphics or they changed the whole MOBO just for the graphics failure?
Since you have an M50, they probably replaed only the removable GPU module. It seems that this module likes to fail, I have a dead M50 here with a defective video module.

Manufacture date was in 2005, this is already quite old.
