Help! How to use an extra notebook HD as an external

Thread Starter
bought a T60 that comes with a 100 GB SATA 5400 Hard Drive.

When the T60 arrives, I am replacing it with a 100GB SATA
7200 Hard Drive because 5400 is too slow.

It was suggested in another thread that I can use the 5400
that I removed as a secondary EXTERNAL drive for the notebook
in a 2.5 case, but honestly, I know so little about this.

In that same thread I was told that there is no external case
for the 2.5" SATA, only for the 3.5" drives.

It was also suggested that I could buy a ultrabay slim sata hdd
caddy and put it in my ultrabay.

I have no idea what any of that means and the person that
was giving me advice suddenly stopped

What I need is an explanation of how this works, and even
better, a link to an actual product on the Internet that I can buy.

Is it a simple matter that the SATA drive fits in a caddy and the
caddy hooks into the laptop as a USB device?

Would greatly appreciate any help you can give.

You go on ebay, or any online store and you buy a "2.5inch hard drive enclosure"

Then u stick ur drive in there, and connect it to ur laptop via usb or firewire, dependin on which u got.

/done

Whoa! hold on there! he wants a SATA 2.5" to USB2 external enclosure, which AFAIK Are a lot harder to find than the older IDE enclosures.

Have a VERY IMPORTANT question here.

I am going to move my files off of my 5200 100GB drive
to my 7200 100GB drive.

Going to use ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE.

It should be as simple as creating a disc image of the
5200 drive, then installing the 7200 drive + windows xp
and then installing Acronis and importing the old image.

HOWEVER....

Someone is telling me it might not be that easy. Windows
XP may put up a hissy fit because after the IMAGE is
restored it is not seeing the same schematics as the old
hard drive.

It was suggested that I may have to go as far as using
WindowsXP SYSPREP to properly execute this entire procedure.

Any thoughts?

i havent used acronis true image, but i used to use powerquest drive image (which was bought by norton and combo's w/ ghost)

windows (95,98,2k,xp) never had a problem with copying one drive to another and then booting, i would then use partition magic to resize the drive (if the older was smaller than the newer) and it was like i had installed everyone on the new drive and never even had the old one

i would assume that acronis is the same way... there might be an option or two that you need to change to get everything you want
