Fan control and/or CPU cooling on an Inspiron 8000

I found a 1Ghz chip for my Inspiron 8000 at a decent price. After I dropped it in, I noticed that the fans switch off and on frequently, under normal use (like now, while I'm typing).

It's not a big problem, although I worry a little about fan wear and tear, since they seem to turn, then off, then on, then off quite frequently.

The old chip was a 900Mhz, so I didn't anticipate heat would be a big problem.

Is this something a new layer of thermal paste would solve? Or is this just the way things are going to be?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe I8kfanGUI will force the fans to run/stop by your choice.

I had thought about that, but I'm not using Windows on that machine, and I'm not aware of any similar program for Linux.

Thanks for the idea, though. Six months ago that would have been my first step.

My thought is that I might be able to smooth out the fan-off-fan-on-fan-off by improving heat conduction off the chip. I've never used AS5 or anything like that, but I was hoping someone might tell me if that would help alleviate the problem I have.

Thanks!

Thanks!
Than I make you aware that there is a similar program for linux, at least for my i6k, which works with i8kfangui under windows, so chances are good that your 8k laptop will also work with the linux equivalent to this program.

If my memory does not play tricks on me it is called i8kmon.
This tool can run as a daemon or in a small window (which can be swallowed by gnomepanel) which shows the cputemp and the fanstatus.

And - as we are speaking of linux and we all know that there exist multiple ways to do things in that world - there is also a gkrellm plugin that can do the same.

I am running windows atm (cause linux still can't compare to windows in runtimes per charge and yes, I tried everything I could find and still my winxp runs about 20-30 minutes longer at same conditions than my ubuntu installation and as long as this lasts I will stay with windows on my laptop) so I can't check the names of the ubuntu packages, but if you can't find them with the info I gave you just pm me and I will check my linux installation.

Excellent! Thank you! That's exactly what I needed, and I see it's already packaged under Debian. Great tip!
