How does this D620 look for me?

I need a good notebook for college. I wanted something mostly for work, web browsing, IM, some games (not a big gamer, just small things like Roller Coaster Tycoon or the first Empire Earth). Here's what i'm thinking:

Latitude D620 Intel® Core™ Duo T2300 (1.66GHz) 667Mhz Dual Core
Operating Systems Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition, SP2, with media
LCDs 14.1 inch Wide Screen WXGA LCD Panel
Memory 1.0GB, DDR2-533 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS
Internal Keyboard Internal English Keyboard
Graphics 256MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 110M TurboCache™
Hard Drives 80GB Hard Drive, 9.5MM, 5400RPM
Fingerprint Reader for Added Security Touchpad with UPEK® Fingerprint Reader
Floppy Drive No Floppy Drive
Bluetooth Dell Wireless® 350 Bluetooth Module
AC Adapter 65W A/C Adapter
Optical Drive - Modular 8X DVD+/-RW w/Roxio Digital Media™ and Cyberlink Power DVD™
Wireless LAN (802.11) Dell Wireless™ 1390 802.11g Mini Card
Bluetooth

It's gonna be $1362 shipped and taxed. Do you guys think this is a decent fit for me at a decent price? I was going to get an M140 instead of this, but its ugly, plastic, and doesn't even have it's own video card, so I opted to spend a couple hundred more for something more quality and an awesome 3 year onsite warrenty.

Yes,I would say it is perfect for what you are wanting.
Dell have really annoyed me with their latest models[not what I was hoping for in 15.4"] but man their 3 year nbd ONSITE warranties are so hard to beat compared to other makes,I just can't bring myself to buy another brand.
I personally would get the D620 any day over the M140.Maybe you might consider the higher res screen option as it is supposed to have higher brightness than the wxga.

Looks nice, make sure you get the 9 cell battery so you can use it around your college campus/library when you can't find an outlet.

Thanks for the info. I might call them and update the screen later. I got the 5% off and will def. buy the other dvd/rw. About your negatives, mono speaker is okay with me. I rarely use sound on a computer unless its a game, and I can use headphones. Few laptop speakers are that good anyways. And as for the firewire and SD memory slots....I don't know what they are so it probably wont be a problem lol. As for the multimedia, if it can play a dvd i'm happy. It's not as good as a decked out inspiron. But right now my desktop is a Dimension 3000, Intel 2.2 celeron and integrated video, 512 memory and it's more than enough for me. So pretty much anything is an improvement on that.

I'm going to go through your specs and give opinions on each. I also bought one of these yesterday that's quite similar:

Latitude D620 Intel® Core™ Duo T2300 (1.66GHz) 667Mhz Dual Core - I ordered the same

Operating Systems Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition, SP2, with media
LCDs 14.1 inch Wide Screen WXGA LCD Panel - This is an interesting choices. 1280x800 vs 1440x900 but the 1440 kind is about 20% brighter. I chose the other one
Memory 1.0GB, DDR2-533 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS - Dell Charges alot for the memory. I'd likely get 512 and buy into a GB off of the Buy/Sell part of NBF or newegg for under 40.
Internal Keyboard Internal English Keyboard - I understand this
Graphics 256MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 110M TurboCache™ - Again, not much of a choice here... an updated XPS M140 or a machine with something resembling a graphics card
Hard Drives 80GB Hard Drive, 9.5MM, 5400RPM - I was attracted by how aggressively Dell was offered the 7200 RPM upgrades on this model.
Fingerprint Reader for Added Security Touchpad with UPEK® Fingerprint Reader - Why not
Floppy Drive No Floppy Drive -
Bluetooth Dell Wireless® 350 Bluetooth Module - Very cool feature.
AC Adapter 65W A/C Adapter - Size is the goal here
Optical Drive - Modular 8X DVD+/-RW w/Roxio Digital Media™ and Cyberlink Power DVD™ - I wonder about this. Dell Charges 140 for the upgrade and Newegg was selling the NEC 6750 for 70 shipped today (when I ordered it). It's a 5 minute process to swap them out.
Wireless LAN (802.11) Dell Wireless™ 1390 802.11g Mini Card
Bluetooth

I think you can probably squeeze a few more dollars out of the configuration. Also, there's a 5% off SB purchase coupon: 72WVB652M9MZ27 that's worth about 68 to you if you didn't already have it

I think you can save 90 by getting the computer with 512 instead of 1GB and buying the ram seperately, 70 by getting your DVD burner elsewhere and getting the Dell with a CD-Rom drive and 60 with the coupon. However, I think you may want to spent 47 of those savings on your monitor and up to130 on your hard drive.

I'm not a fan of the 9 cell battery... even considered getting a 4 cell battery but it depends on how much time you expect to spend away from an outlet.

This computer almost completely owns the XPS 140 performance wise, between being a newer generation processor, lighter, having a graphic card but is less multimedia capable with a mono speaker, no firewire or SD memory slots.

Now that Dell finally has a Biometric option, the Latitude line is great for college students. Biometrics is a better anti-theft mechanism as it doesn't require online access like the old CompuTrace method to render a stolen laptop useless.

Warning: Save multiple finger scans. Having a burnt or chapped finger will give you problems when you try to slide your finger at POST. So giving yourself more chances to have a clean and undamaged finger to scan is a much safer option for you.

Lol. I never thought of that. Good advice. So what kinds of things can I play with a low grade video card like that?
Probably no brand new FPS games, but I imagine it will run some older FPS titles, like HL1, Max Payne, Etc. I imagine it will run RTS games fairly well, unlike intergrated graphics would.

As long as it's as good as or better than the integrated. I have Intel Extreme 2 Integrated on my desktop; is it still better than that?

Because I downloaded Quake 4 and Doom 3 demos today just to see if my integrated could do it, and Quake 4 was pretty bad; lots of stuttering. But Doom 3 wasn't bad at all.

hey guys,

I was also in the middle of configuring a D620 and looking to save some money on improvements I could make on my own. I was wondering how you would know that the NEC 6750A willl fit this Dell D620? Wondering if it's worth the risk.
