Help me fix my desktop!

Here is my problem:

A couple of weeks ago my computer started freezing every once and awhile. Now, everytime I turn my computer on it freezes shortly after it boots or it wont boot at all. What do you think would cause this? Hardware? Software? I checked all the fans and they are working so I dont think its an overheating problem. I have a fairly cheap power supply so it might be that. Any ideas?

System Specifications:
AMD 64 Socket 939 3000+
MSI Motherboard
Leadtek 6600GT
WD 80GB HD
BenQ DVD Burner

Sounds to me like it is the powersupply is going.

One thing to check is see if the same thing happens in Safe Mode. This should all but rule out software, unless something is bad in Windows itself.

Something that might help is check the Windows log to see if there are any reports on the freeze.

Another option is try with one stick of RAM, one hard drive, and the video card and see if that helps. Still freezes/won't boot try with the other stick of ram (if you are using more than one). Might be a bad stick of RAM.

My hunch is a bad/dieing powersupply.

Get the Ultimate Boot CD and run one of the burn in programs until it fails.

un plug everty thing except the vid card and the a drive (floppy) and see if it boots to A:\ assumming you have a floppy boot disk . If it do , then connect the boot h/d. only If it boots from it , add the rest till it freezes. You cuold have a virus, bad ram, dying pwr supply.Or just a virus on your boot sector. If you can get it to boot to the hardrive, try to clean it on line,or avg it.

this may be a retarded thing, but i've seen it before. Make sure network boot isn't the first or anywhere on the boot list. As Squirrel Dog said, disconnect everything, but instead of using that floppy, just see if a windows OS will boot from the CD-rom. IF so connect the hard drive and see if the windows setup sees it. If it does, then yes use that UBCD

It sounds like you downloaded a program from an email attachment probably FVProtect.exe which takes up a lot of CPU. Check your task manager to see if you have any strange processes running and if there are, search Google for a removal tool. Even if you terminate the process, it will come back next reboot.

Kind regards,

I just booted it up for the first time in a few days and it seems to be running ok. There were no odd processes running that I had to terminate. Is there a program that tells you how good our power supply is so I might be able to rule out the possiblity of a faulty power supply.

depends on your motherboard. Sometimes you can get monitering programs to give you readouts of all the voltages.

Another reason to think it is the power supply: My dad used my computer earlier today and it froze. When he turned it off it would not turn on again. I tried it a few hours later and it turned on but then froze. Now it wont turn on again. You have to wait like 30m-1hour to get it to turn on again. Any suggestions or should I just save for a new power supply.

well, when it doesn't turn on, what does it do?

When you press the button nothing happens. No noises are made except for the button going in. Also, I have a MSI Neo2 Platinum so does that come with software to check the voltages? I have all the stuff that came with it.

Well, now im not so sure it is the power supply. I turned it on last night and ran spyware and virus checkers and they got rid of some stuff and it seems to be running alright now. I think the reason why it wouldnt turn on for awhile was because I just pressed the button in to turn it on and not restart.

Check the fan/heatsink on your video card.

I have had 2 Nvidia MX400 cards crap out on me because the heat sinks became loose. Replace with an aftermarket GPU cooler. I got 2 from a local computer show for 8 bucks each.

this cant be software related. there is no software loaded when the PC is first turned on. unless the bios is bad, which if it were, itd be crap all the time.

this sounds like a cpu heating up too much, and not letting the computer get back on till it cools off....like someone else said, open it up and look at it.

Here is a nice power supply. Works like a champ for me and I have an AMD64 with 2GB ram, PCI-E video, 4 hard drives and all the PCI slots filled up.
