i think one way Dell could avoid penalties from Intel for using AMD products in their line is to acquire a company that uses AMD themselves. Basically, if it doesn't say "Dell" on the outside, Dell probably won't incur penalty.

This is defiently awesome news for us all. According to AW's site, they are going to remain somewhat independent. Therefore I have a feeling AW.com will remain, and the awesome cases/marketing/retial parts is still going to be intact. Whens the first AW coupon code gonna hit so that we can all buy ourselves a new computer!!

Alienware mentions that they will remain the same on the outside, but will take advantage of faster lead times for building computers, etc etc...all the stuff that gets Dell its accolades.

This is the win win situation, whether you like dell, AW, thecommish, or hammerhead...everyone is gonna be happy in the end!

Cheers to all.

You're right Coffee. This is Dell's way to get around the 'Intel only' clause...

I just had a thought: I may benefit from this merger- Being military, we get a nice discount on Dell's products (even lower than Dell's website). Maybe I'll get a military discount on AW...

Here's my take...

I really think we should all step back and adopt a wait-and-see attitude. I really don't believe we're going to see outsourced tech-support or bloatware on our machines. There will be no 40%-off coupons and no build to a price-point policy. What does appear to be happening is that Alienware is being positioned as a halo-product, something for the Dell buyer and user to aim for.

They're going to get a superior machine with superior build-quality and superior suppport, after-sales care and superlative performance. Dell gets the "coolth" factor and we get Dell's clout in the market. That's the short version folks...what do you think?

Wait and see peeps, wait and see...

I'll bet money on me being right.

Right, I have now cleaned the coffee off my tft, and regained my sanity from hearing about this.

I shall reiterate what half the USA and UK must be saying

WHAT THE FLYING **** YOU DOING ALIENWARE SELLING OUT TO THOSE BASTARDS.

You just KNOW Dell is gonna ruin Alienware somehow.

I would rather grind my nuts with glass sandpaper, and ride through london naked firing rockets from my arse singing elton john top of my voice while doing a handstand on a unicycle, and farting the national anthem, then own a Dell.

Red they did say that they would leave AW as is in terms of many aspects. They just said that they would take advantage of the quicker lead times, ability to offer better financing, and a couple other notes in the official message. As far as dell customers "aiming" for AW as a goal, I think this will just legitamize AW in the eyes of many, now they are backed and owned by one of the most powerful companies in the entire world. I know I take heat for saying it, but so many AW systems go out to college age people on financing, and I think that's because some people with real financial stability are stuck on Dell for its sheer size and market power, as well as getting so much performance for the buck (and they overlook the "lack" of retial hardware) and take the best deal.

My question is will the XPS line be shut down in the near future in favor of the AW brand? Or will they truly keep them seperate, and almost compete with themselves, since every order goes to dells pocket in the end?

It sounds like the CEO of AW has his priorities in line, in terms of protecting AW reputation in the gaming world, and in terms of using the aquistion to further advance the product. If we all took a step back from our opinions and looked at this as a business deal, we'd see the major step this is for AW, good for them. They had a dream, and it just got bigger and better.

i wouldn't bet it across the board, because Dell is all about price. That will trickle down, to some limited extent. Now that's not necessarily a bad thing, because you may see lower AW prices even with the same quality hardware. Dell continually tries to reach certain price points in their own systems, and certain ways of thinking may (or may not) be applied to AW.

i'll go with the wait-and-see, too though.

But well...the essence of the Alienware Marque has died out with this, the soul is gone for me.
