lap the heatsink....ive done this with my 2ghz p4 desktop system and got a 3 deg drop....i just came across an article today of someone doing it to an desknote.....someone should do this with their sager and post the results

I would be all over doing this, especially if it would cause the fan to kick in less often, therefore extending battery life.
I would also use some quality thermal paste as opposed to whichever thermal tape is probably being used?
I would also want to go one step further and lap the CPU as well.
My only concern is that this would probably void my warranty?

Whoa, I never even considered this... Would a heatsync manufacturer make heatsyncs that aren't perfectly flat, though? I mean, yeah, some will have defects, but wouldn't the vast majority by now (after years of research) make for less proneness to this problem?

To answer your question about flat heat sinks, yes, they do. If you are putting on a new heat sink and the bottom is not at least close to a mirror finish, it ain't flat. Lap it out and use something like artic silver II or III. Oh, and make sure you take off whatever thermal tape that may be there first

Not to mention that heatsyncs often end up slightly concaved from the manufacturing process. Also, even the lettering on a cpu adds a minute amount of airspace where there should be none.Lapping is usually only necessary in overclocking situations where the core will be heating up significantly due the excess voltage you are pumping into it.
I gather that with the already cool running temps of the p4,that manufacturers don't reallly think it necessary to go 100% on the mirror finish because it works good enough.n the case of a laptop, every little bit less your fan kicks in is probably the better!
On the same topic, does anyone have any knowledge of an utility that will read cpu temps on a Sager?
