Satellite P35-S609 Lock-Up problems

Hello all,

My GF purchased a Toshiba Satellite P35-S609 laptop from Best Buy about two years ago. About six months ago, it had a problem that it would automatcially cut itself off and that it felt hot to the touch. Assuming the worst, I'd installed mobMeter on it, and sure enough, the processor seemed to be getting so hot that the laptop would cut itself off. Took it back to Best Buy, and after three weeks, it was determined that a fan in the back was only working at half capacity.

Since then, my GF has reported that Windows has been locking up on her. Upon inviestigation, it seems that at any time while the laptop is on, the computer will 'freeze' = (the mouse doesn't work, keyboard doesn't work, etc.) from time to time.

It's the middle of her college semester, so taking into Best Buy right now is out of the question. MobMeter reports that the processor temperatures are stable, parallel to what the laptop is doing. (If i'm working it hard with multiple apps, the temp goes up like normal). I'm considering runing MEMTest86 and seeing if the RAM is ok, and I've just running a Sandra software report to see what hardware she has in here that might be questionable to Toshiba fans. I'll edit the post with the HTML link for the report later.

Has this breed of laptop had issues before? I've always known Toshiba as a good, reliable brand of laptop, and I'm wondering if this particular laptop is a rotten egg or something of the sort.

You might start task manager and leave it running. When things lock up, see if something is using 100% of CPU. Also, look at the event log.

Only problem with that idea is she'd have to have it up 24/7 while Windows is running, say in a windowed-mode. Even if I have her keeping it in the Taskbar, she wouldn't have enough time to pull it up in case something goes whacko.

I don't think she'll have the patience to deal with a weird program up all the time.

Any other ideas?

Nothing in the event log? Will cntl-alt-delete work when is it frozen?

I didn't get a chance to check the event log. Her laptop is at her college apartment, 60 miles away.

And no, Ctrl+Alt+Del didn't work the last time I attempted it when it froze.

I'm guessing it's still too hot.

I have the same machine and also got it in 2004 from Best-Buy. Last 6-8 months machine will turn it self off, was getting too hot.

My fix was buying a small fan desk and put it in high when the machine is on. Problem solved..!!!!!

My only concern right now is that the right side of the screen is showing now a green vertical line from top to bottom. I guess the LCD screen is gone.

I got the extended warranty (3 years) so I'll take to "service" soon.

I am guessing that both of your machines are overheating due to dust collecting inside the air tunnels between / on the heatsink and fan. I have a P30 and have serviced it twice due to over heating problems from too much dust inside.

Yes an external fan will fix the problem but if the problem is casue by dust on the inside, it will only delay the service that is needed. Check out this post, hope it helps:
