External Hard Drive problem

I have a Sager 9860 and use a Maxtor One Touch II 300 GB external to store all my important stuff and pretty much everything I didnt want to lose in the event of a HD failure in my laptop. Well I think my external failed. I had it plugged in to my laptop but dont keep the power on all the time. I went to turn it on and saw the blue light come on so I thought all was well. The drive never showed up on my laptop, so I shut it off and then back on...still nothing. I unplugged the usb cable and plugged it back it and nothing. I noticed that the drive doesnt spin up anymore. Does anyone know if this is a sign that it is totally broke or is there hope. I had over 200 GB of stuff so I am a little distraught. I also have another Maxtor and and I swapped the drives out and it didnt work in the other encloser either so I no its nothing like that. If anyone has any I deas or where a good place to send it to see if it is toast and get my data back please

Sounds like the drive itself is bad. Probably need to call around to your local computer repair shops.

Do you think the drive can be repaired and do you think the data is lost?

Well if it's just a matter of the drive motor dying and the platters haven't been damaged (which I'm guessing is the case) then they should be able to fix the drive by replacing the motor and then recover your data. But you really need to talk with a local repair technician; if they can't fix it, they may tell you to send it to the manufacturer for repair/recovery.

Looks like Maxtor has a factory in Germany. If I were you, I'd talk to these people first.

yep take the drive out and get it to maxtor, even if the whole unit has a short warranty, drives this days have usually 3 or 5 yrs of the mfg.

Thanks for the reply I will check them out. I dont know if the warranty is still good after taking it out of the enclosure or not but oh well because I already did to do some trouble shooting. I dont care at this point as long as it can be fixed. Thanks for the help

Re: Maxtor Hard Drive Investigation

This law firm is investigating the possibility of a class action suit against Maxtor for hard drive failures.
