Mini ATX (shuttle) computer.

Hey guys, I haven't started a topic in a while, but I have some questions about the Shuttle ATX computers.

Of course I am looking into building a computer or purchasing a laptop, and I was looking into Mini ATXs, such as the http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...=BROWSE&depa=1 AMD64 barebone.

The only downside I see, is only having one CD drive, so you couldn't make copies of another disc that you already own.

Also, I've been looking at clear covers, heres another link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=51064 shuttle xpc, would they fit the amd64 barebone? I think they would.. right?

Also, how is the ventilation for this? It has 1 huge fan, is that enough for an amd3200+ 1 gig of ram 9800pro that I'm going to be putting into this?

Also, If I get the Asus 9800pro, http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...alog=48&depa=1 Will it take up the PCI slot since its so huge?

If you don't know the answers, I'll just email shuttle, but please just tell me your opinion of this case. I'm trying to get the most opinions, because I have never had experience with it mini atx, or any shuttle products.

You might want to check out

At the very least, there's some really interesting stuff.

The ventillation is OK, but not very good. Of course, since you're using an Antec Sonata, I doubt you'd notice

Note: I've got an Antec SLK-3700AMB, which is VERY similar to the Sonata. I hate it. I absolutely despise it. The cooling is crap. Even with the modifications I've made (2 80mm blowholes) it's cooling is crap. The sonata is even worse.

You could modify the shuttle and get some decent cooling fairly easily, though.

The ASUS 9800 won't take up a PCI slot, because the AGP slot is below the PCI slot on the Shuttle SFF systems. If it's too big, it simply won't fit in the case.

Antec Sonata is fine for me.. I don't overclock (too) much.

i have me a shuttle (see sig) and i absolutely love my baby.
not sure how they perform with the 64's though.

Just a question, do you think the 230watt power supply is big enough to handle a64 and all those other good things, or do i need to buy a 400+ watt one
post #8 of 25
The 230w PS will be more than enough, yes. You've got to keep in mind that it's not exactly powering a great deal of hardware- the MB & CPU, an optical drive, 2 hard drives at most, a single PCI card, and an AGP card.

And btw, you couldn't fit a 400w+ ps in there.
highest PS you can get for a shuttle is 260watts, which is plenty for whatever you can fit in there.

I looked into shuttles before I discovered Sagers. what is the advantage of a shuttle? it is less portable clearly, although still portable. does it cost much less? even after adding the cost of a monitor (probably a portable flatscreen or your portability will suddenly become poor)?

It comes to about 1900 dollars from newegg.com with an lcd monitor.. thats a64 3200+ 1 gig corsair.. audigy sound card.. dvd+rw dvd-rw/cd-rwarakdnmawonf all those good things.. 160 gig 7200rpm hard drive.. I don't need a laptop either. Power of upgradeability (cpu, gpu, ram.. hard drive)

I have that exact same case.

I'm not really displeased with it. My only complaint is its a bit too heavy to be carting around to lan parties.

ciro, do me a favor, because I'm curious. After your desktop has been on for a while, preferably after it's been under full load running Folding @ Home, Seti, SiSoft Sandra's burn-in wizard, or whatever, for like an hour or more, feel the outside top of the case.

Is it noticeably warmer than the air in the room?

It was on mine when I had an Athlon XP in it, and it is on the 4 other computers I have in that case (AXP 1800s w/512mb of ddr, GF2 MX400s).

I had 2 90cfm fans in it, and even that wasn't enough to keep the 2.3GHz 2500, A7N8X, Radeon 8500, and 2 80GB hard drives acceptably cool. I added two blowholes, and that helped, but still wasn't enough. So, I took the AMD system out of it when I bought a better case for the dual cpu system, and put a dual P3 board in the SLK-3700. With a single 1.3GHz Celeron and silent fans (2 Vantec 80mm Stealths and 1 Enermax adjustable 120mm) it runs cool enough, but it's not up to my standards for my AMD machines.

My sonata isnt that heavy.. but I don't bring it to lans, I bring my friends 2 year old dell.. That's why I am looking into mini atx, or a laptop (if I can get my grandpa to pay for it, theyre so expensive)

well I am confused. if you don't need a laptop, then you don't need portability right? then why do you need a shuttle?

for $1900 you could configure a kickass Sager laptop at PCTorque.com. I don't think it would quite meet those specs but it would be pretty close. the power of upgradeability is big though. major limitation on laptops is the darn video card not being upgradeable in most if not all laptops. I guess the same is true regarding the cpu not being upgradeable on most if not all laptops. thus if you find yourself in need of better of either, you are stuck buying a whole new laptop. an LCD monitor only lasts about 3 years before it starts to go, and I don't think those are easily swapped with a replacement on laptops. I usually expect a laptop to last me 3 or 4 years before it needs replacing because it will not play the latest greatest games etc. or because something breaks and cant be cost effectively replaced. with upgrading, I wonder how long a shuttle computer could last you? food for thought, but I have my Sager already so this is not a pressing issue for me.

Personally, I don't really like notebooks, bad experience with them, etc. I don't relaly like clevo designs much, either. I'm still not sure if I am going to get CRT or LCD for my shuttle, probably lcd for it to be portable.

A shuttle would probably last me a while, my desktop has lasted me for 4+ years, my laptop, from apple, which I got for $2100, 2 years ago, I barely used, and sold it recently for $680. I don't need _that_ much of portability, itll pobably never leave my house except for the lans me and my friends have at eachothers houses.

As I said before, I don't like clevo models, and if I did get a laptop, I'd invest full, either getting a hypersonic ax6 or a voodoo m:460 or m:855

I'm kinda confusing myself right now, so the above might be hard to understand :/

Edit: the 8790 model looks decent.

the other advantage to laptops

I forgot to mention, if you wind up doing a wireless lan at home, having a laptop vs. a shuttle or desktop rocks. I have a wireless lan at my house and I can literally use my laptop anywhere. I have two power supplies so I can bounce between my two favorite areas (office and tv room) without even carrying the power supply with me. I even use my laptop while spending time on the pot, if I know I am going to be in there a while, but that topic has already been covered in another thread . . .

Fiction,

Are your facts fiction?

Apple laptop -- don't use -- maybe because it's not a Windows machine?

Don't like Clevos -- and then list three?

I'll agree with you -- you are confused.

Get a good nights sleep -- sober up -- and START OVER.

Mine runs NICE and cool in it.

I have no problem with the cooling. Two 120mm fans pushing around 80-90cfm each... Air circulation is not a concern.

I also have four hard drives mounted in it, that one 120mm fan blows directly on. The other 120mm is an exhaust.

Go for a BenQ LCD. I just got the FP767 v2. GREAT LCD. I love that LCD.
