Clevo M570U or D900K for a Desktop Replacement GAMING Laptop?

Thread Starter
I am planning to buy a laptop very soon.
The one I have my eye on is the upcoming soon to be released Clevo M570U (aka Sager 5720 Dual Core).
I am hoping to use this laptop primarily for Gaming.
Secondary use of it is me trying to learn web making, Photo/Video editing and Photoshop.
I am also hoping to have this laptop last me 3-4 years until I get an upgrade.
Was considering the M570U vs the D900K as it looks better than the 9750.

Here is a sample of the Clevo M570U at Eurocom.ca :
http://www.eurocom.ca/newsroom/press...ess.cfm?id=152
I have heard that this laptop should be out in a few weeks to no later than end of May 2006.
A UK Based company is already taking orders for it as can be seen here:
http://www.rockdirect.com/notebooks/xtremectx_cons.htm

As Rockdirect is the only website that has a configurable selection at this time, I played around with it and it looks like a great value.
Here is a sample config I wanted:

(M570U) Xtreme CTX Core Duo T2600 (2.16GHz), 1GB / 100GB / DVD Writer & 17" TFT

RAM - 2GB DDR2 667MHz RAM
HDD - 100GB (7200rpm) SATA HDD
OS - Windows XP Home
WARRANTY - 3 Years Collect & Return
CASE - Standard Case
OPTICAL DRIVE - 8 x DVD Dual Layer (-/+) Writer
ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE - None
WIRELESS - Intel Pro Wireless A/B/G
OPTION - Graphics Card - ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 XT 256MB
OPTION - TV Tuner - Internal Digital DVB-T TV Tuner (PAL)*
TFT SCREEN - 17" WSXGA+ X-Glass TFT Screen (1680 x 1050 Res)
STANDARD SOFTWARE - No software
LOGOS - Rock Etched Logo on Lid
OPTION - 2nd HDD - No 2nd HDD

Price £1798.00 - $3,124.65

You think this laptop will be able to achieve what I plan to do for it in the next 3-4 years?
Also, considering it has an option of having either ATI XT1800 ot NVidia go7800GTX, which Vid Card would be BEST for Gaming?

Also, because I am planning to have a Desktop Replacement Gaming Laptop.
Would the Clevo D900K (aka Sager 9750) be a better deal?
(D900K 64bit Dual Core vs M570U 32bit Dual Core)

Because the D900K I wouldn't mind getting is only $200 more ...

I bow have a regular 5720.
Centrino 2.13
2GB DDR2 533
7800GTX

Personally... I'm completely astonished by it's performance!

I have it now for 2 days.

I can play Counter-Strike: Source ALL Maxed on 1920x1200 with constant 70+ FPS, and a Video Stress test average of 105 FPS.
Battlefield 2 all maxed as well and runs perfect! LIKE BUTTER!

I think the combination between Core-Duo and the 7800GTX would be perfect! It would take about 15min of the tota battery time and heat about 1 or 2 more ºC, but the performance would be great.

I am and allways been a NVidia man, allways supported this manufacter's ideas and politics. So I'd probably go with the 7800GTX, it's a kickass VGA!

Bottom's down:
If I was you I would go with the 5720, it's much lighter and the battery lasts more. I know this isn't a problem for people who buy desktop replacements, but a good battery time ALWAYS come in handy.

On a 17" Laptop monitor what would be the best resolution for my purposes?
WXGA - (1680 x 1050) or WUXGA - (1900 x 1200)?
Pros & Cons between the 2 resolutions?
well i would go with the 9750 because amd dual core kicks ass, the x1800x may be better ut i love nvidia and i would wait for the dell xps 1 1710 it will have core duo and a 7900 gtx, it comes out the secod week in april
post #5 of 48
Point #1: AMD is better than Intel in *most* cases. It's getting to be a closer race though. On-chip memory controller is a big plus for AMD.

Point #2: AMD is the only option for true 64bit computing. So if you're interested at all in playing with 64 bit, it's your only choice. Core Duo isn't a 64 bit platform.

Point #3: The 7800GTX and X1800XT are going to be pretty close performance wise. I've heard the ATI chip uses less power, and thus produces less heat and more battery time, but then again it hasn't been tested very much. The 7800GTX has been on the scene for a while now, and shows very excellent performance.

I ordered the 9750 due to all the reasons I stated above, and the option for adding a 2nd HDD, and 2nd Optical drive. These things come in really handy, especially for a traveling computer tech and gamer.

EDIT :: To address the question of 1680x1050 or 1920x1200, I chose the 1920x1200. You can always scale back in games (even though native resolution is best), and having the extra real estate for working with office/tech programs comes in really handy. The 7800GTX is powerful enough to push a lot of the games at 1920x1200 also.

I just noticed that for an extra $100 more, I could be able to get the Sager NP5950!
So the cost for what I want would be very close enough to choose either of the 3 laptops.

Which 1 would probably be best for gaming and long term value of the 3? M570U, D900K or 5950?
Which would be the best investment long term?
The 5950 has been pushed back from release for about 3 weeks. I was trying to choose between the 9750 and the 5950 also. I ultimately went with the 9750 because of the X2 4800+. Even though the Turion is a good processor, and 64 bit; the future is definetaly going to the dual core setups.

The 2x 7800GTX in SLI mode is a force to be reckoned with though. My thought process on the justification for getting the 9750 and not the SLI was in a year or two, I'd be able to upgrade the GPU in the 9750 to something that would be faster than the SLI rig is now. And the same upgrade cost in the SLI comp would be twice as much seeing as you have to replace two cards.

That just leaves the 19" monitor. It would be nice to have that with a 1920x1200 resolution. Even the 1680x1050 would be nice. 17" on a laptop is a good size though. I had a 4780 with a 17" 1440x900 and it was great for what I needed.

Pros & Cons between the 2 resolutions?

1680x1050 pros.. none
cons..none

1920x1200
pros.. if its too small for you, you can change it to 1600x1050
you are done with scrolling, most pages and fotos wouldnt't even fill haf-screen.
cons.. none

Thanks unknown.
Now back to having only 2 choices of either the 5720 32bit Dual Core (M570U) or the 9750 64bit Dual Core (D900K).

Somehow considering the similarity in price, logic should dictate go w/ the 9750.
But somehow I just really LOVE the 5720 body style compared to teh 9750
Wish they come with a 64bit Dual Core 5720 before this coming fall

Like I said, I will primarily be using this beast for gaming purposes.
I am also hoping to use this laptop for 4 years until I have to upgrade again.
Guess that is why I am hoping to get the best deal for my money that will come before end of summer/fall.
You could wait around till they make a SLI laptop with the Turion X2 dual core. They should be out before fall I would think. But then, you're playing the waiting game ;D
post #11 of 48
they both expensive over price

Thanks.
So in short for the resolution, its pretty much if I am willing to pay for the extra few bucks for it.

Maybe I will go to a shop later today and see what the 2 resolution look like in a 17" monitor and see what looks bettrer for me.

Its really a difference between processing power and mobility.

The M570U is going to be more mobile than the 9750
-lighter
-processor made for battery efficiency (1.5hrs+ non gaming)
-Thinner

The 9750 is more of a power house
-sweet AMD power
-will destroy most games in the near future

It comes down to what your going to use it for. If its just going to sit there on a desk 24/7 then it would seem logical to go with the 9750 because you will not need to do any computing away from a power outlet. On the other hand if you want to be able to go to the library or classroom, where you might not always be able to plug in, then id say go with the M570U. Both are going to be solid dual core machines. The intel mobile processors are not to be under estimated, they are sweet chips. I have an AMD in my desktop, so i am not going to say anything negative about them, they are great also.

This is my opinion. If your going to buy a laptop your going to want to be able to use it like a laptop (ie, move it around, work unplugged, etc.). So i will be going to buy the M570U around Junish after it is released and some people review it. Keep in mind i am also a student and i am going to have to haul it around a college campus in a backpack and might not always be in an environment where i will be have an outlet availible.

So it comes do to basically...
What are you going to use it for?

Also keep in mind it might be nice if you save a few bucks on the M570U and buy some accessories. Like maybe a new digital camera, external hard drive, surround sound speakers, external tv tuner, sound card, or some other device that you might want to go with your laptop. Thats part of how i justified choosing the M570U as a future buy. Hope this helps.

P.S. Keep in mind Sager has not yet released the specs on the M570U as far as graphics are concerned. Other resellers are offering the x1800xt and the 7800gtx. I am thinking one of the reasons that Sager has not yet released their product is because they are waiting for the 7900gtx to be released and tested for their systems. I am also pretty sure the x1800xt will be availible of that fits your fancy.

Excellent reply Luke

Now it really boils down to this last question.

Will the 64bit be such an importnat feature for me as a Gamer for a Desktop Replacement gaming laptop?

At this time, that is the major diffrerence between the M570U 32bit Dual Core and the D900K 64bit Dual Core that I am torn about.

I am so planning to keep this laptop for at least 4 yrs and would like it to run anything I give it in excellent condition.
(It is a big investment after all.)

Apart from gaming, I am also planning to teach myself web making and video editing (just bought myself a Panasonic PV-GS59 mini-dv camcorder) and also learn how to use my Adobe Photoshop CS2.

PS:
How hard is it to add additional options that I chose not to get on an initial purchase?
How hard is it to upgrade parts of this particular laptops?
I never had a laptop yet but have built my Desktop myself.
Well Windows Vista is going to be 64bit. It really depends on how much you feel you need to run Vista as soon as it comes out. Many, including myself, will probably wait and out and laugh at all the bugs that will be driving new Vista users crazy for a few months.

About upgrading yourself.... I know many of the resellers will void the warranty if you open up the laptop and start poking around yourself. You have to be really careful because in many cases it is impossible to get various parts of a laptop if something were to go wrong. Because of this fact, your only saving grace will be your warranty. Personally i would recommend buying everything that you want that is availible at the time so you can avoid this problem. Basically if you want to do it yourself, you need to be really careful and examine the warranty. I know numerous people on the forums have put in their own RAM and hard drive. I am not an expert on the warranty so i don't know where they draw the line. I know for a fact something like a paint job breaks warranty, but keep in mind, in this case they are completely removing the guts of the system. I can see how a company cannot take responsibility for a machine that has been completely gutted.

Good Luck...

P.S. Found this...

hmmm.
So at this time, 64bit is mainly for Vista optimization?
I really am not in a hurry to upgrade to Vista, like you and soem other peopel have said, I am more likely will wait it out a bit for the bugs to be fixed.

I guess I will try to get all the options when I purchase my laptop as well.

Still comes down to the Clevo M570U or the D900K.
Decisions decisions
I really like the body style of the M570U and only thing I worry about it is that its 32bit not 64bit, thats it.

I am starting to think that because my primary use will be Gaming and I want to use this laptop for at least 4 yrs.
The M570U should be able to handle what I give it and more.
Just hoping I won't need that 64bit before I will need to get a new laptop in 4+ years ...

well...

I'm basically in the same boat as you; I like the design, portability, and battery life of the M570U, but want the 64-bitness of the D900K. I'm thinking about waiting till merom (64-bit dual-core Intel) comes out (~September); Clevo should be releasing a new M570 to utilize this.

I just wish I have a good estimate on when this 64bit Dual Core M570 version will be released.
If the 64bit Dual Core version of the M570 comes out around Sept-Nov, I think I can deal waiting for that.
But would that actually even sound reasonable?
They are just planning to release the 32bit Dual Core M570U in the next few weeks ...

I have a good Desktop at home and my work pc can still run some games at the lowest settings.
So if all the options I want comes available before Xmas 2006, I think I can deal with that.
But of course it could get delayed to next year and that would just drive me nuts waiting lol /cry

Wish they made a AMD X2 64bit Dual Core version of the M570U now so it wouldn't have been a tough decision
post #20 of 48
If you feel you can wait that may be a good idea. Personally im going ot have to get one soon because i will need it for school next year. Hope it all works out for you!
