xgl/compiz ... the next best thing in linux eye candy

i trashed my semi-broken gentoo install for Ubuntu Dapper Drake Alpha Flight 6 yesterday, and figured what the hell, and installed xgl and compiz to get the uber cool eye candy.

i am not gonna put up any pics because they are all over google, but i must make a few comments.

thanks to a howto on ubuntuforums installation was rather simple, even a total n00b can do it. a reboot later you get your eye candy.

the wobble effect (when you move/resize/grab windows, they wobble like jello) and the cube (desktop pager) are my favorite features. over all the resouce use is not much more than just your stock x config with gnome. just for the fun factor i also set up glmatrix screensaver as my wallpaper. now i do NOT recommend doing that. it looks hot as hell, but when i did it my CPU use spiked up from ~5% to ~80% so although still quite usable, there is lag with that feature enabled. window transparancy among other features is also pretty l33t. also the famous geanie effect from osx is there as well when you minimize a window to task bar. another "good" feature (i personally never use it, but mac users swear by it) is expose which is also there. press F12 and you got it going. with addition of brightside you can configure one of your corners (top right recommended) that when you move your mouse there, its the same effect as pressing F12. so you don't even need the keyboard to enable expose.

paired with all the other great user-friendly features that Dapper offers i think Ubuntu is really a step ahead of the competition of bringing linux to the user market. as much as we hate to admit it, but eye candy is part of the "user friendly" equation.

in fact here it is:
hidden terminal + usplash (boot and halt) + xgl/compiz + graphical config tools = user

Heh I have been considering tossing it on my Gentoo box for fun, but a couple of t hings holding me back...

One, I use that box for audio work and I dont want to screw that up
Two, I dont know how well XGL plays with e17
Three I havent made a backup copy of the install yet in case I screw something up

i just put this on my new ubuntu install....sweet stuff. i have the 3880 with the go6600 and i get a little tearing and the occasional skip, but mostly it runs pretty smooth, and by smooth i mean its ****ing sweet!

my 2 pennies....definitely get quinn's updated packages, they run MUCH smoother and faster faster packages
also, i found that the easiest way to install this was using a script someone wrote on ubuntuforums, but this will only work with GNOME, running on dapper 6.04 or 6.06, and an ATI or NVidia card sweet install script

abf: I'm pretty interested in installing Ubuntu (been a long-time debian user) when my laptop arrives so let me ask you some questions:

1) What kind of video card you have? My laptop will have an Ati Radeon X1300.

2) By running XGL/Compiz up, didn't you notice a decrease in your CPU/RAM performance? didnt you notice your system slower? Again, my laptop will have 1 gig of ram and an intel core duo T2300.. will it be enough to run xgl+compiz with no delay in my system?

1 -- i have a Radeon 9700 128MB and it seems to be working very well with the eye candy on and everything. hell, i can ever run Enemy Territory on it just fine with minimal lag.

2 -- i'd say that there is more ram taken up most likely, but CPU usage is still in the same 5%-10% ballpark as it was before (AMD64 3200+) i installed all the stuff. I do have a gig of ram though, so whatever extra is being used doesn't really impact my performance.

the verdict: you should be fine, there will be like a 1% slow-down maybe, but thats about the extent of things.

you'll more than make up for this lag by recompiling the kernel and disableing uneeded processes.

ok, thank you

Just fyi,
I had ubuntu and xgl/compiz running on my i9200 (specs below) and things seemed ok, except when I tried to play video. This pushed the cpu usage way up and the video's would only play in a small window which kind of defeated the purpose of the big 17" display on my i9200. I've got an e1505 w/ 2.0ghz core duo on the way and I definetly plan to try this again.

interesting acruxksa...i played a dvd full screen on a 1280x800 15.4" display through Totem and it seemed to work ok.
