FX7: For those of you starting from scratch

Thread Starter
I ordered my FX7 with a blank hard drive. I had some inconsistent performance at first and pretty much found the following:

You NEED to install the AMD CPU Driver. If you don't, a lot of times your FX60 will be recognized as a 1ghz cpu in certain benchmarks (like 3dmark06).

Your 3dmark06 score should be in the 4000-4500 range, depending on which drivers you use.

If you opted for RAID0 with 2 7200RPM drives, Sisoft Sandra will give you around a 75-80MB/sec score. Not quite as fast as the 100GB you see with twin raptors, but for a notebook, that's pretty damn impressive

Don't disable both onboard serial ports in the bios unless you really WANT to see that "Broken" com port in your device manager

The wifi card supports Super-G on my D-Link DI634M mimo router. The throughput is excellent, better than I ever thought possible.

The front clock is "iffy". Right now, after rebooting and configuring it to state a 12 hour time format rather than a 24 hour format, it currently reads the time as 39:42

Yeah, that BF2 niggle... After installing it and patching or whatever, it won't run out of the box. You'll get the ole BF2 "Splash and Crash", meaning you'll see the Battlefield 2 splash screen, the screen may or may not go black, and you'll just crash back to desktop. As has been stated previously in these forums, you have to go into your "My Documents" folder, edit the video.con file and change 800x600@60hz to 800x600@61hz. After you do that, you can run it at whatever resolution you want. I force mine to 1920x1200 with the following command line:

C:\bf2\BF2.exe +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +playerName yourplayernamehere +playerPassword yourpasswordhere +szx 1920 +szy 1200

Oh, and don't forget to go into your mods\bf2\movies directory and rename *.bik to *.bak so you can skip those ANNOYING intro movies (and no, this doesn't mess with punkbuster in any way).

All in all, i'm impressed with this notebook I have a teeny bit of LCD light leakage at the bottom, but nothing that I'll notice long term...

Good info and again, congrats on the system.

Sharing tips always makes a difference to others!

Thanks again!

Hey thanks for the information. I will apply what you learned about the AMD drivers to my desktop which has been giving me mis-reports in benchmarking tests even though windows detects it accurately.

I have not gheyed on my FX 7 for a while ,but I will be playing some on a business trip later this month.
I will probably be playing Battle for Middle Girth and Elder Scrolls Oblivion (maybe some Star Wars Empire at War if I get the Star Wars mood going).

Nothing makes me feel all e-P3nisy like breaking out the FX 7 in first class and showing up all the IBM baggin Platinum Sky Miles business travelers.

A friend of mine (a couple of friends) have been playing Star Wars Empire at War over in Iraq so I had to go buy it and see how it was. Not too bad. Just have to get a hang of the interface, but that aside, I think I like it a lot better than the last RTS (what was it - Galatic Battlegrounds or something like that).
