G1 Info, Questions, Benchmarks & Much More!

Hey Guys,
I was checking out the drivers for the Hitachi 7200 and the IDE controller and they're both lame Microsoft drivers? Is this correct?
Also, My F2 button doesn't access the BIOS when I hit it during boot up! I can't get into my bios? And at quick glance on boot up it looks like the ram said DDR 166?
On top of that my wireless button doesn't work and dashby's does. He is using the XP wireless PCI card adapters and mine are the Atheros AR 5001X Wireless Network Adapter... How could I load the windows PCI drivers w/o the xp disk that ABS doesn't include? His wireless button works mine doesn't.
I'm on XP Home he's on Pro... I have a Pro disk from my last machine, should i install Pro on this machine?
I know, lots of questions, but any help would be greatly appreciated..
Not sure why ABS loaded all of these lame drivers?

BUT WHY CAN"T I GET INTO MY BIOS??

New Benchmark results w/ the new CAT 4.1 drivers as well.. not much in the way of 3d mark improvement but, big CPU imprvemnt..

Thanks,

Just for reference.

The F2's CPU score is 426 while yours is 504. Now I can say with confidence that PMs are quick, although not as quick as P4s but quick enough to make me happy

I would recommend a full install of XPPro. Clean out the HDD and load the drivers from scratch. Don't do this if you don't feel comfortable enough with installing Windows.

My F2 did ship with a WinXP Pro disc. I think Dashby got his as well. Maybe look again and if you can't find windows CD give ABS a call.

Don't use the MS drivers, use Intel's. Download from intel's website. Also use Engenius' drivers for your athero card.

After everything's done, defrag!

Thanks XStern,
I think i have a project for today.. I'm really surprised that ABS loaded all of these crappy drivers? Why would they do that? I'm going to call them about it..
Does anyone have a link to the Engenius drivers?

Assuming your chip is the same as the F2's.

Frankly, being geeky I find the tweaking a bit fun! You'll learn more about your machine this way. Default drivers aren't crappy, as long as it works.

Another good utility to see what's going on with your system is Sandra from Sisoft. Run a search on Download.com and they should have it.

Computer companies have the mentality of if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

My Compaq still has M9 drivers dated from 03/2003.

I think the MS drivers are default and are required.
Can you really replace those drivers? What are the advantages?

Well I thought since I had my XP Pro disk from my M5 w/ me that I'd be able to install it on my G1. Problem is, the key for the XP Pro disk is on my M5 which is in California.
I'm in NJ for awhile.. DOH! Is there anyway to get the Key for the XP Pro disk? Would ABS have it?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
ks

Bios access

Kindser, hold down the delete key when hitting F2 at boot-up. This will take you into setup.

XSternMinator, can you describe in some detail what drivers you have replaced? I never heard anything about replacing the HD drivers and the IDE controller drivers.
The HDD and IDE drivers are usually loaded by windows during install; however, time to time manufacturers of chipsets release updated drivers for such south bridge components.

Most famous of such is the VIA 4 in 1 drivers.

My old drivers:
Intel(R) 82801 DBM Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24CA
date: 7/2/2001
ver.: 4.0.1001.0

New drivers:
Intel(R) 82801 DBM Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24CA
date: 11/14/2003
ver.: 5.1.1001

See following link for Intel's release notes on changes

So the IDE controller driver is part of the chipset driver package? What about the HD Driver?
Also, did you install the Intel CPU Hot Fix drivers? (I believer there are two)
No I didn't, thanks for the reminder. I will install the CPU hot fixes right away!

As for HD, I am using standard MS drivers.

IDE is part of the chipset driver package.
Where did you find the CPU hot fixes? Couldn't find them on intel's website...
Actually I was about to ask you the same thing. Where to find HotFixes. Apparently the fixes are released by Microsoft as a post SP1 fix. Been trying to find it on MS's website.

EDIT: Found it!

Run a search for Q332179 on MS's site.
