I'm done with Norton for the last time...

After numerous scans, updates, and zero virus reports, I decided to reload Avast....this morning the count was up to 5 Trojans before I left for work.

I knew there had to be issues when my CPU load would jump to 100% when I use any sort of scanner...virus, ccleaner, adware, etc. and nothing would completely load or just hang.

Why I ever uninstalled Avast...oh yeah, because it was having issues with Zone Alarm. Seems to be ok now though.

Good for you. I dropped it 4 years ago and have been using Kaspersky ever since. Haven't had a single problem since I've been using Kaspersky.

Welcome to the club. I would never let anything by Symantec within a mile of any of my machines, but I learned my lesson quite a few years ago.
Same here. I won't install anything from Symantec. They're all garbage and are so intrusive to your system that we should be able to take them to court for stealing. heh.

Out of all the companies stuff, I think Norton/Symantec is the worst across the board than any other company. Just don't install anything from them if you value your machine.

with any antivirus spyware cleaners and blockers are still needed for a bullet proof porn rig lol

antivrus protection and the rite one for you is just a matter of opinion theres nothing wrong with symantec. in some review,s its still #1 and not just for selling too a bunch of morons that dont know any better.

i use the corporate version on the 40 rigs i have to take care of along with spybot search and destroy, spyware blaster, and spywaregaurd the latter 3 are free and work well with each other. with a good firewall i never have to clean any crap out of these rigs.

The only problems I have with Norton is that it kinda takes over your system a bit.

Ok, fill in a little software noob, please. Why does Norton suck, I mean, don't you have to pay for it? How much ressources does it use, and how much HDD space? I got Norton >-<, what's the danger with using Norton, and what other progs are there... and how much do they cost? >-< ohhh boy, thx guys,

I disliked norton products from the early days because as said above it seem to try and take over. In my personal experiences the virus product was a serious resource hog. I like avast and have been running it on 3 machines for a few months now.
if you configure windows properly norton/symantec will not hog anything.

im at work writing on a p2 celeron 333 with a whopping 64 ram windows me with norton 04 how much can it hog theres none to start with lol, and this rig works just fine. on XP get into your services and shut down all the stuff your not using a good guide on this will be at tweakxp.com [system performance] it will shave a minute off most boot times with norton or any other AV for that matter. on norton 06 disable its protection service and that speeds things up. if you want to use less resources try the corporate version

Norton Corp FTW.

I wasn't happy with Norton either, so I took took a $30 option for 3 years (less 30%) for McAfee because they worked well for me many years ago.

Turns out McAfee isn't much better these days. I will be looking into freeware options on next reformat or purchase.

AVG is an excellent free scanner. If you want, try NOD32 for 30 days.

I use Zone Alarm Suite (AS and AV disabled) combined with Symantec AV Corp 10 (because it's free). The only program of Norton's I ever liked was Speed Disk for its ability to relocate the swap/paging file to the inner sectors of the HD.

I use NOD32, and I think it does a great job. Not instrusive. I haven't caught it hogging up everything yet. ..and it actually catches stuff. hehe

I like Symantec as well, but let's not forget, Symantec makes Norton AntiVirus and all of it's products Also, since they bought out that company that makes ghost, I like it too . however currently I am beta testing M$ One Care (includes: Firewall, antivirus, antispyware (M$ destroyer), back up). It's alright, but for $50 a year I'll stop after it goes live. So Symantec AV Corp 10 is free? Where do I sign up

edit: Excuse me, the official name is Windows Live One Care Beta and if you beta test if you get the first year for $19.95. Here's the link for those interested:
http://www.windowsonecare.com/purchase/Default.aspx
Also, if you open that link, use IE. I don't think it will let you install the beta using FF, it uses ActiveX to install it.

Yes, but SAV is not even in the same league as NAV. NAV assumes you're an idiot. That being said, SAV *also* assumes you're an idiot, but it leaves more options open for a potential sysadmin or netadmin who ISN'T an idiot to dick around and make it a better AV program.

It also uses FAR less resources than Norton, which installs about seven thousand (exaggeration, yes) processes because it assumes most of its customers are only surfing, sending emails, and playing solitaire.

my college forces every single computer that is hooked up to the network to use the corporate edition + we have spyware search and destroy. it forces a scan every thursday after class, but u can stop it with task manager if u want. It works good, but I don't like how when they installed it basically almost every toggable option is blocked. oh well. Haven't had nothing come close to my comp yet.

Nod 32 is the best paid antivirus software.

Well, the count was 5 trojans, and it took installing HiJack This to completely remove them.

I have (had) Norton System Works updated daily, Pest Patrol, Zone Alarm, and cleaned daily with CCleaner. Nothing ever reported a problem, so I have no idea how long they've been on my computer.

So I'm keeping Avast, Zone Alarm, and HiJack This.
your still leaving yourself open, hijack really only reads procceses and deals with highjackers. yes if your infected hijack is worthwhile. pestpatrol is junk and spysweeper isnt much better.

as of now this week you need 3 cleaners your AV, spybot and a good reg cleaner i like regsupreme pro. you need 2 blockers again free spywareblaster and spywareguard.

with zonealarm for a firewall and admuncher for pop-ups

what i have mentioned makes for a bullet proof rig you can go looking for donkey shows and wont catch a flea the best is that they are all well balanced with each other every client i have that use,s my setup leaves it alone loves it and currently over 50 rigs set up like this running without a hiccup [this week] things change fast in the security world lol

You want to know what the best anti-virus software is?

YOUR BRAIN

Don't download suspicious files or from suspicious sites, don't click "yes" or "accept" on every window that comes up. Seriously, I haven't had AV software installed for years. About once every 6 months I'll install SAV or AVG and scan a few times, and nothing ever comes up.

Common sense is hard to come by these days.
