JimBob: I do not own Doom 3 or Fear or any other game to run tests with.

DirtHerder: I saw the D/Dock but was looking for something that would allow the laptop to be mounted like so http://media.totalaldo.com/gallery/NightLights/IMG_4229

tiipe: The laptop is impressively quiet and cool at least compared to my inspiron 8500 (with a 2.6P4-M). I was using the cores at full throttle while doing some compiling for 45 minutes and it got warm, but not unmanageable.

The bottom portion of my screen does look milky white when compared to the rest but I'm fine with that look. Someone a bit pickier may not be.

Coming from a 15.4" notebook, this one feels large but perfect. I always thought I might want a 19" but at that point, I might as well lug around a desktop. The build feels solid and fits given that this is a gen 2 chassis (the previous XPS being the first gen).

heh that is sick.

I actually ordered a D-Dock for my M90 (with any luck shipping on the 12th ), so I'm kinda curious about the option to stick a graphics card in there.

Especially since I ordered a second 24" monitor along with it (the $500 price was just too good to pass up).

edit: that sounded a lot more harsh than I meant it to. I don't mean to offend you Vixaria

np

I'm just happy with the info you provided. I just looked at mine M90 and did not find a spdif.. I wasn't aware of the cable you refered to.

Have a nice day

Also, I was hoping for 3 monitor support (2 external, 1 laptop screen), but as expected the M90 will only support a total of 2 screens. You can configure it to use 2 external monitors which is nice but it would have been better if they were both using DVI instead of 1 DVI, 1 CRT. On my old Inspiron 8500, I used a PCMCIA graphics card (VTBook) to extend my display to 2 external monitors (DVI) plus the internal for a total resolution of 3x1920x1200. The VTBook is a bit on the slow slide in terms of rendering even at 16 bit color but at least it was a 3rd monitor. I am looking forward to an expresscard graphics adapter and if anyone knows of any please let me know. I also hope Dell decides to use a Dual Link DVI adapter (like apple) or even better, 2 Dual Link DVI for their next high-end notebook so that it can handle their 30" monitor(s) at full resolution. 1920x1200 is fine until you use one of those .

Have you see this Matrox dualhead2go?

It seems an elegant solution for your 3 display problem (2 external tft + internal tft)

Im also after this setup. I have 2 19" tft wich I want to run with the internal M90 one. The 19" tfts are 1280x1024 so all you need is that the fx2500 is capable to run at 2560x2048 in the external vga or dvi out and that dualhed2go. Is the fx2500 capable of that external resolution?

Im purchasing the M90 with an 1620 tft so maybe I will have a bit more room to run at that resolution needed for the external 19" tfts.

Hello krraqk,
I am aware of the Matrox, but am looking to drive 2 external monitors at 1920x1200 and the internal LCD. For a total resolution of 5760x1200. Thanks for looking out though .

An expresscard version of the VTBook (www.vtbook.com) is what I'm looking for.

Wow, thats a lot of resolution!

Im more humble, but Im not sure if I would be able to run my two 19" tfts at 1280x1024 AND the M90 tft at 1440 x 900 simultaneously without an aditional videocard (I dont have yet the M90), do you think the fx2500 is capable of do that with the only adition of the Matrox dualhead2go? Or that will not be possible?

Thanks in advance.

My guess is that it will be able to handle 2560x1024 but since I haven't tried, I can't say with certainty.
Oh thanks thats sounds promising.

Then from your words I can assume that the 2560x1024 is listed in the control panel for the 2º monitor?, even with your wxga internal tft resolution?

PD: I just opened that www.vtbook.com link you provided and at first Im thrilled by those FOUR monitor images , I think I need to read that website carefully

Many thanks for the info

The highest stated resolution is 2048x1536 = 3,145,728 pixels.
2560x1024 = 2,621,440 pixels. I don't know if it will support the dimensions the Matrox requires but it can definitely handle the number of pixels.

oops.. the needed resolution is not listed, bad thing...

Although theres some hope because pixel wise there is room for it. Well maybe that 2560x1024 resolution is hidden because it detects that the monitor you have attached dont support it. It seems that I wouldnt know it until I will have it with me.

About those vtbook, they look god but I only see listed the pcmcia one, its there also a xpresscard already or maybe its only planned?
Anyway this solution seems a bit in the expensive side (300$ for the card + 70$ for the dualhead connector), for this price the D/dock seems also an option, that in addition also offers some more options.

Thanks another time.

yeah the VTBook solution seems a bit sketchy. I've read some stuff about recognition and performance problems with the VTBook depending on what you are doing.

The VTBook is only available in PCMCIA format. I'm hoping they (or some other manufacturer) will release an express card graphics card soon. I haven't heard anything yet.

Haven't had much time to really experiment with my M90 yet (got it on Thursday, and have been pretty busy since then), but just from loading up WoW and a few other games on it and messing around, it looks to bench about 10-12 FPS faster than my XPS Gen 2 (2.13GHz, 6800 Ultra) playing games in 1920x1200 at max settings -- no small feat. I'll post some real numbers once I get a chance to play with it some more, but for now, rest assured, the 2500 is a fully capable gaming card.

Thanks for the info.

I have just discovered that Matrox has an utility to test the notebook to see if it would work.

I just ran the matrox compatibility app and it said my system (M90 with Quadro FX 2500M) is not compatible.

DirtHerder: The VTBook was slow. It was not ideal for anything that required speed. I used the screen that was attached to it to check email and keep text up. I liked it because it had a DVI connector and supported a resolution of 1920x1200.

Thanks you for your time!!

But how sad is that! How can one of the best today videocards not be capable to handle that??

Hrm... In light of all of the above, I reccomend the Expansion Station option for the M90.

Yeah it seems a safe option, but its expensive in Europe, its 330 € (around 370$).

How much it costs in USA?
