Acer Aspire 5672, Processor Upgrade

Thread Starter
Hi

Can anyone tell me that if it is possible to upgrade the Acer Aspire 5672 1.66 GHz to 2.16 Ghz processor.

Thanks in advance

It should be - the CPU is in a standard socket. There aren't that many Core Duo's out there, so I imagine the BIOS should be able to handle it. I think someone on another board documented going to dual 2GHz...

A guy on another forum has done it,
I dont know if I am allowed to link to a competitor forum so I wont
but the T2600 has successfully been mounted in a 5672

then again he claims he has but doesnt have any images to back it up
so it could be right or wrong, he did claim to buy the processor from a legitimate source though
the processor is in a mPGA socket which has a screw instead of a lever, so cooling aside its definitely possible

The question is - how can we overclock the T2300 1.66Ghz CPU.

I have tried Clockgen, but it requares data about the PLL chip that is used on the Acer motherboard. You can download it from here:

http://www.cpuid.com/clockgen.php

If someone knows what PLL is used it would be very helpful for many of us

well acer use a standard intel chipset on the motherboard, I suppose opening up the machine and having a good gander at everything would help identify the parts you need information on.

The intel 945 is used on many motherboards, and I can't see acer investing anything in changing it.

however overclocking would heat this system up much more, so that might be dangerous.

anyone have benchies showing preformence diffrence between 1.6 and 2.1?

also, i HIGHLY doubt that guy did that.........the heat alone with the 1.6 is enough to make me go mad......let alone a higher clock/hotter proc

just my pennies

I dont think the faster cpu's would run that much hotter.
the cooling mounted on higher specced machines is pretty much the same as whats on your 5672 I would be quite happy to put the 2.0ghz processor in there and possible even the top proccy.

A faster fan might be needed, and I shall be scouring the web for the best replacement fan, since its only in there with a couple of screws.

Can anyone PLEASE post the other forum thread where the guy says he has replaced the processor ?? Or send it to me via Private Message please..
I´ve been reading the INTEL specs on the Txxx series processors..
The heat dissipation for all the processors is the same ... 31Watts, ... I believe only the faster one has 32Watts....
So i think it´s very possible to replace the processor in that lovely machine ;-)
I saw a T2500 (Centrino Duo 2.0Ghz), to sell for 400U$ aproximately...
I´ll gladly change mine 1.6 for a 2.0 ... if anyone tell me that´s possible,,,,,,
Well .. Hope to hear any new soon

See ya

Just upgraded mine to a T2500 (2.0GHz). Found a deal i couldn't pass up. Worked without any changes, no added heat, and as you would expect, it's faster.

Also i have not found a way to get clockgen to work on this board, really annoying me too.

What do you want to know about it? Remove the screws on the underside of the notebook. Then there are about 8 screws to remove the heatsink, swap CPU, voila, done If you need detailed info i can help you out, but it really is that straight forward. Nice thing about this laptop is you don't have to remove the keyboard ect. to get at the CPU, it's very accessable.

Edit: Added some pics for you, look below.

Hey Sucka
when you removed the heatpipes did you see the GPU should have been to the right of the fan , did it look like the gpu could be prised out of a mounting, or does it need de-soldering?

a piccy if possible would be great

no-one who has done an upgrade has yet taken a picture of the system without heatpipes

Here's a couple of poor quality pics. Lighting was bad when i did the swap

Found the pics, so here you go. One thing to note, when you take off the rear panel there is a plastic piece that goes over the DVI connector. If you're not carful (or didn't know about it like me) it would be easy to snap off when you try to pry it up Lucky for me, i noticed it before i gave it a good tug. So anyways, those are the screws, and just drop in the new proc in and away you go.

Thankyou thankyou thankyou
you are so kind to do the pictures for us,
so it looks like the ati is soldered on ah well, with the rumours of an x1600 5672 being released in canada, the motherboard should be upgradeable

I hope your processor is still running fine update us on any changes please
and keep up the good work

No problem.

The proc is running great. There are quite a few Yonah's around to be had for cheap. I picked this one up on XS for $265 shipped, you can't beat that!

Could you get any pics of the PLL chip? Might allow for a little OCing fun for those willing (like me.. )

Couldn't find it. The maker of SetFSB doesn't have time to make a version for us. CPUID (Clockgen) won't reply to PM/E-mail's. And i can't find anything else.

Pll - Ics 954123

I tested with PLL chip ICS 954123 according to this thread:

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...ght=ICS+954123

With my 5670 it recognizes CPU speed and FSB / RAM but i cannot change the values. I tried disabling Intel speedstep by using the laptop as a desktop (from the power management) but still without success. If anybody manages to OC with clockgen would be nice.

BTW about OCing the x1400, using powerstrip allows for GPU clock change. Any memory OC freezes powerstrip. The default clocks are 445 / 342. This is the 5670 with 1Gig RAM / 100G HDD. Sucka mentioned about a specific Powerstrip version but where do I get it from?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah i tried that PLL and it didn't work. I've actually tried them all in Clockgen to no avail. We're just in a waiting pattern for now. I also couldn't find the PLL.

PM me your email and i'll send you the powrestrip you need. I downloaded it, but it kinnda was a pain to find.
