Maybe I missed a thread somewhere , but has anyone found a good notebook cooler for a 4780 . Just use mine on the desktop and want to keep it from meltdown

There are no really good coolers on the market. Antec's is probably one of the best (for the price, it had better be... mine should be here this week, so we'll see), but you're best bet would be to build one. If this Antec thing isn't up to my standards, that's what I'm going to end up doing...

another question since I dont have my 4780 yet - do the fans on the bottom exahust air - guess one could wind up with a worse problem if the cooler fans and the laptop fans are going in opposite directions.

I ardered the X-Cooler. It has 2 large fans and a 4 port USB hub. I chose it for its easy portability. It nor my 4780 has arrived yet though.

Heres some pics of it:

Pretty cool huh!

If the 4780's fans blow in the same direction as the 5620's, then yes, the Antec cooler's fans blow in the opposite direction of the CPU fans. This isn't a problem, and shouldn't make a huge difference though.

Have to think about that - seems like you would wind up with a vacuum and less air flow, witht he caveat that I flunked thermodynamics

Heeyoung...
keep in mind that we're talking about axial fans here. Axial fans couldn't pull any kind of a vacuum if their lives depended on it. This is why I can get better performance out of an 84cfm blower setup than I can out of a 119cfm Vantec Tornado- the tornado's airflow drops rapidly as the backpressure rises; the blowers' airflow doesn't. (//edit: it doesn't drop off as rapidly, anyhow)

Also, there isn't a seal between the pad and the laptop, so no vacuum will form.

Well I found this really good review on the antec cooler (plus temp graphs/charts) ,
seems the product may or may not be useful

I just got my Antec cooler yesterday. Not impressed so far. I'm going to try to flip the fans around (I have to figure out how to do that first) but so far, I'm not thrilled with it.

I was ready to buy one until I read the review - however will see what you say since you have one - there must be something out there that works well - keep us posted

I've got a 5680 laptop. I used the Targus Traveler CoolPad for awhile until my Nexus TDD-3000 heatpipe platform arrived. Both seem to do the job of allowing better airflow to get to the intake fans underneath the laptop. Fan doesn't have to run as hard to get same amount of cool air inside. You could use anything handy to elevate your laptop if you keep it on a desk.

I like the Nexus also for those rare times I have the laptop on my lap since it is a stable platform and I know the intakes won't get blocked.

Normally, I use a wireless mouse/keyboard from Microsoft so I don't have to deal with the hot air coming out of the left side of the laptop. The heat has never been that bad but noticible with extended use.

Good luck
