Need new HDD for Toshiba Satellite Pro M10

Thread Starter
Hi there,

my original Toshiba MK4021GAS just died in my Satellite Pro M10. I thought to simply buy a new MK4021GAS to simply swap old vs. new one, but ran into an "IDE #0 error" during startup of my notebook. I noticed that the new MK4021GAS had a Compaq P/N in addition on its label, so I assume that only Toshiba certified HDDs will work in my notebook. Yagh.

Thus, can anyone here please post his or her experiences of which HDDs work within a Satellite Pro M10 (Type PS630E-G207V-GR)?

Please advise.

TIA,
Joachim.

compaqs are common to have a jumper on them, remove it

@protosh, there was no jumper on the compaq drive, so nothing could be removed, unfortunately. I rather suspect that Toshiba modified the firmware to customize part of their harddisks for Compaq. A real pity.

@all: So, what HDD are expected to work in a Toshiba Satellite Pro M10?

TIA,
Joachim.

There is a jumper block on the back of the drive. Are you possibly talking about a drive in the secondary bay, where a CD/DVD drive would be? If so, the new drive must be set to be a slave. You need to put a jumper on pins C and D. You can use the jumper from your old disk. Any drive will work on your machine. Look at this:

Funny, I had a similar problem with a Toshiba HDD with a compaq part number sticker on it that would not work in my tecra 8100. The drive did work fine in several other computers, including some Toshiba's. I even tried using a jumper in every possible configuration and none got it to work. When I got my M2v the drive worked fine in there and the brand new HDD I bought from Newegg worked fine in both the M2v and the 8100. I concluded that there was something about the firmware onthat Toshiba/Compaq drive that was not compatible with my 8100 and just slapped the drive into a USB housing and used it for backup & extra storage.

So yes, any 2.5" Parallel-ATA type notebook HDD should work fine, the Serial ATA's (or SATA) drives will not work as they have a different connector that is only found in some new laptops produced in the last year or so.

Thanks for the answers. Good to know that any Parallel-ATA type 2,5" notebook HDD should work (except the Toshiba/Compaq branded ones). And, yes, setting any jumper on the Toshiba/Compaq branded MK4021GAS HDD wouldn´t have helped, as the firmware really seems to have been modified by Toshiba for the use in Compaq branded notebooks (and others maybe). Thus, I will now look what new HDD I might pick for the future.

Thanks for all the help,
Joachim.

Same is here.

Hi,

I just have the same Toshiba dirve with compaq stickers on it. I just got this drive as a result of a Hardware Upgrade to my HP notebook. It was working there and I replaced the dirve with a 80 GB one. Now that I want to use this irve in my postable Hard-disk box as an external drive. but it does not work in any combination with jumper or without jumper. Any idea how to get it worked ?

Cheers,

Hi there,

meanwhile I am near to pulling out my hair. I tried a Fujitsu MHV2040AT 2,5" drive and it does not even mechanically fit to the notebook´s IDE connector. Well, had lots of a hazzle to get the drive returned to my dealer.

So, please, can anyone out there tell me which specific non-Toshiba HDD he/she is using in his/her Satellite Pro M10? That is, I am in need of a specific drive model/type to order the right one next time.

Thanks a mil in advance.
Joachim.

Is there some caddy or adaptor that you need to use off the old HDD that came out of the laptop? That fuji drive looks like it should have worked.

The Fujitsu drive is unfortunately equipped with an IDE connector that has a plastic shield above the upper row of its connector pins. This shield collides with some pieces of the notebook´s IDE connector. Therefore, I would be more than glad if someone could point me to any specific 40 GByte HDD which he/she has already installed into his/her Satellite Pro M10.

I think I understand what you mean. I just pulled my tecra open to see if the HDD I have has one of those guider thingys above the pins and it does. So I can say stay away from the Samsung drives.

Ok, now I know that I ought to stay away from Samsung drives. Thanks a mil, so far. But, well, which specific drive to buy now for my M10 ?

Consider one of Seagate's Momentus 2.5" HDDs. I've got one (100GB) installed in my Satellite 5205 and it's been working perfectly for nearly the past two years.

Compared to the original Toshiba HDD it replaced--which died rather quickly after only a few months due to overheating--the Seagate runs very quietly and can take high operating temperatures way better.

Looks as if Seagate´s Momentus would physically not fit with its IDE connector in my M10: same problem as with the Fujitsu drive I assume. But thanks for the info.

Is here anybody out who uses an internal HDD larger than 80 GB in his/her Satellite Pro M10? I still have a WD800VE which meanwhile gets a bit tight with its 80 GB in size... .

Joachim

Hi ghn,

thanks for this hint. Maybe you have an explicit drive name and model of a suitable 160 GB drive?

Thanks a mil,
Joachim

I have no brand preference, telling you the truth. I own and use any hard drive brands that you find out there with no issue so far. Stay with high rpm drives if you can, and the higher the buffer speed the better.

Hi qhn,

you mean the Satellite Pro M10´s BIOS has no 128 GB HDD detection limit? Moreover, the Satellite Pro M10 doesn´t neccessarily physically accept any HDD drive: The reason is that some HDD´s physical IDE connector is covered by some plastic cover and therefore doesn´t fit into the M10´s HDD slot. Therefore I was asking for a specific brand and type of a new HDD. Just to give you an idea why I was asking.

Kind regards,
Joachim

Can you give us the full model number of your M10?

cheers ...
