hi there. i have a 8600, with a 1.6 dothan, and 1gig ram.

is it possible to put in a 2gig cpu? is there anywhere i can find out how to do this.all i have found up to now is how to replace the GPU.

also, to upgrade to 2gig ram will i have spare slots?or do a pull the old ones out and put bigger ones in?

thankyou so much in advance.

1) yes u can put any 400mhz dothan in there, so up to 2.1ghz

2) if u can find a 2gb sodimm stick, then u can have 2 gigs of memory and empty slots. you only have 2 memory slots, so u do the math when the highest is a 1gb stick.

thanks for that.

where do i find the cpu?

i opened up a small cover in the back, and i found what looks like my bluetooth card or some other network card (really small) and an intel chip covered with a plastic sheet.is that it?

the other cover had the RAM in it i think.how do you remove the ram?

also, i have seen two different 2.0 processors, the 760 and the 755...the latter costing more, which do i get? and my board is 479 pins yes?

thanks again

get the 755, as its the only one out of those 2 that will work.

As for the cpu, I cant tell u because i dont have ur laptop, so u should check out dells site for ur model and for manuals, as there should be one tellin u how to find the cpu.

if anythin, just look for a long copper heatsink, and thats where the cpu is

does this sound compatible please?

Module Size: 1GB Package: 200-pin SODIMM Feature: DDR PC2700 Configuration: 128Meg x 64 DIMM Type: Unbuffered Error Checking: Non-parity Speed: DDR333 Voltage: 2.5V Memory Timings:CL=2.5

what real advantage do i get over my 1gig RAM if i upgrade to 2gig.

do both slots have to be the same, ie 2 x 1gig cards

thanks

To access the cou you'll have to take the laptop apart from the top. Before you detach the part with the power buttons ecc., pulling it from the left after you fully opened the lcd (180°), then you take away the keyboard's screws and it, and underneath you'll see the video card and the cpu cooler on the left. Oh, you'll have also to detach the fan under the laptop, on the left. You'll take away some screws and you're there. There is all the process shown with photos on the Dell's site, somewhere. It's non difficult but it's a delicate work. I never did it but got my cpu changed twice at my home..

Never mind about having open slots. Maximum memory is 2GB anyway.
