XPS ...Good for gaming for new titles??

Hi

I'm a console gamer right now (Hitachi 57"HDTV+360) but would like to move onto mobile gaming due to a recent job change. The thing I love about the $400 360 is that I can run all my next-gen titles (Oblivion, CoD2, BF2) at 720p/1080i at a fixed frame-rate of 30pfs min.

I'm planning to buy the 17" XPS laptop from Dell in the very near-future (I have a budget of around $1500) and would like to get some feedback whether its a good gaming laptop or not? Would I be able to run the games at similar res with similar framerates like I get on my 360?

Thanks
SS

Simple answer: yes...as long as you get it with the GeForce 7800GTX video card. The cheaper video card option (6800 Ultra) is still fine, but not quite as good.

The 6800 Ultra is no longer sold with the M170 new so that won't be a problem. The lowest spec system from Dell should have no problem maxing out most game's graphical settings. The only thing that needs to be added is another gig of ram (2GB total).

And if your used to 30fps at 720p, wait till you see BF2 with a 7800gtx on a wUxga screen man!

Thanks guys but I just saw a couple of other threads further down relating directly to Oblivion and how the thread starter had a XPS (with 7800GTX, i think) and his laptop was having a hard time trying to push 1280x760, etc with max settings!!

The last thing I wanna do is to spend $1500 on a laptop that 'downgrade' the graphics below 720p :-(.

Thanks again for all your responses.

If your playing oblivion on a 56inch HDTV on your 360, why buy a second copy of it to play on a 17 inch widescreen? I would use the m170 for more PC specific titles that you can play on the go? Not a bash, just curious, lol sorry if i came off harsh.

None taken ;-).....like I said before, I'm gonna be spending more time on the field/road now from next week and I have just started out in Oblivion (5 hrs into the game) and I'm a HUGEEEEE Morrowind fan and will spend ridiculous amounts of time on it.

Good idea then heh, to bad you cant transfer your saved games back and fourth from the 360 to the m170.

Don't forget that even on a 720p HDTV a resolution of 1280x720 is still most likely lower than what you would be running it on with your computer monitor. You will easily be able to run those games at those resolutions. If you start talking about 1080p then we might have a bit of a debate

Funny thing, I play OB on my 17" XPS as well as my 36"LCD TV, and I kinda prefer the 'up close' view of the 17" for first person. Not sure why.

Well if you think about it, your 17" notebook LCD at 2.5 feet away from you is visually the same size as a 55" screen 10 feet away... the draw of HDTVs I think is being able to share that experience with everyone in the room and not the one person in front of the small screen.

send a private message to eminem3150 and ask how to get a low price on the xps. he showed me and is gonna save me loads of money. The xps at its lowest specs is $1999. This is what im getting but if you talk to eminem he will show you how to get the same specs but for alot cheaper. I think mine came out around $1648 or something like that.
