Let me add some flames to the fire: Gentoo, imho, is the best distribution for its customizability. I wouldnt recommend it if you're looking for something easy to install, though.

Anyways, back to the point.

I think the following site may be of service. I haven't tried it, but it should allow mediadirect to work with linux. It is a guide to setting up the windows bootloader (NTLDR) to boot GRUB or LILO which would then boot Linux.

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Dual_Bo...NTLDR)_and_why

Hope this helps!
I havent' even checked your link but thanks for the addition to the thread, I don't even use media direct but I dont think the poster of the previous message to you even read the original post (god, some people are so lazy)

Oh goodness...

As you pointed out in your earlier post, this topic did go totally AWOL from the OP. There was a discussion (mostly on page 1) over what exactly MediaDirect was and what it did... That is what I was responding too!

I don't use any version Linux, although I do have a couple of UNIX boxes.

O-Level? Ordinary? That about sums it up! Couldn't cut the A-Level or the Advanced Higher National Course?

I bet you support Celtic!

Anyone get working results?

I've switched to NTLDR as my bootloader and added a mediadirect entry which is supposed to boot my mediadirect partition. No such luck.

If your back using NTLDR rather than GRUB, just re-install Media Direct from the CD. Can't see a reason for this not to work

(1) The mediadirect is in the HPA of sata HD. Normal partition software (no mattter windows, linux) can't see it, can't touch it.

(2) Dell's MBR can boot mediadirect from HPA.

- so what I would do is: keep Dell's MBR (use Mediadirect repair CD to fix it); and use NTLDR to dual boot Windows/Linux

I've tried the MediaDirect Repair utility cd and it hasn't helped.

The mediadirect repair CD?

In order to make Dell MBR to work, there must be some gap between xp partition and the first dos partition. My HD layout is:
Partition 1. 48MB hidden FAT Dell utilities
Gap 8MB
Parittion 2. NTFS WinXP

If there is no gap, the repair CD can't help.

I guess for linux, the same thing, must have some gap.

I reinstalled XP Pro - fresh, Ubuntu - on fresh partition. Try my earlier post then come back. I've already explained what happens. WHat DELL MBR are you talking about ? Dell don't do MBR's.
