Webcam doesn't work on Aspire 5670

Hi,

Just got the Aspire 5672WLMi last weekend. It is my first ever laptop and it seems decent enough though i haven't really tried to put it through its paces yet (runs UT2004 fine with all settings on max though). It's a shame i am buying it here in Beijing though, by default it only comes with 512mb of RAM! Now has an ok 1GB.

Anyway i can't get the webcam to work. Because i wanted an English version of windows the people i bought it off d/l all the drivers and stuff in the shop, though i didn't really pay much attention. I now regret this as i don't really know what they used and i want to do another reinstall.
Sorry off the point again. I did download the built in web cam drivers and did a clean reinstall of them. The computer sees it and the LED comes on when i select it but all i get is a grey square where my ugly mug should be. To my mind it is broken but i have no experience with webcams so could be wrong.

Is this a software problem i can fix or do i need to take it back?

um, as it is China maybe i can say forget the camera and in recompense give me more RAM/better graphics card...worth trying huh.

As an aside, will it be possible to upgrade the graphics card some time in the future with this model?

Cheers for any help!

I know i may not have seemed that bothered but it is annoying so if anyone does have any ideas with the camera that would be cool.

I was also promised that my Graphics card was the one with 256mb of onboard video memory but i am really finding it difficult to find out if that is the case. Most things which see the card just see the 512MB. i.e. it includes the system memory that the card also uses. However Sisoft Sandra states:
Total Memory: 512mb(128MB Video) (246mb System)
Texture Memory: 378MB

Perhaps I am being dumb but the sums don't work out for me. 128+246 = 374 which is still 138mb short of the 512mb it initially states. Is it infact texture memory + the 128mb onboard that equals the 512mb? So assuming the 378mb is system memory then my card is just the 128mb variety right? I just don't quite understand where the 246mb comes from.

Does anyone know of any quality detailed software which should be able to make all the distinctions? dxdiag and the empowering software don't do the job.

Thanks again,
Toll

um, just checked what 3dmark06 sees, it says:
Total Local Video Memory 134 MB
Total Local Texture Memory 134 MB
AGP Aperture Size 248 MB
i guess the 2 locals is the onboard memory right? which would indicate i have the 256mb card...sorry, could someone who knows how these things work please clarify all this for me...

sounds like the camera is faulty
check the settings though, make sure there is plenty of light around you
have a play round with the orbicam software where you can replace your image with another, that would show if it is picking you up at all

as for the graphics, So far it appears the the core is soldered onto the mainboard
if this is the case, then the only way to upgrade would be to get a different mainboard with a better gfx processor,
since the aspire cases are pretty much the same its not inconceivable to fit a different mobo
you would need as well as the mainboard front and side panels for the usb/ sound and switches as they are located in different places, they could also be part of the mainboard, which may mean a chassis change too but thats for me to find out

I will also be asking acer if they can solder on a different core
for example the x1600 is the same core but with more pipes enabled, and should require the same cooling as the x1400 so that should fit straight on if they are willing to do that for a charge.

we shall see what turns up at the end of my warranty (or patience LOL)
