OMG- External monitor Problem!

So I bought a 3007WFP off ebay, it came sealed, never been opened just as advertised, then I open it, hook it up to my XPS gen 2 and all I get is lines, lines in linux, lines in windows, lines in the BIOS. just lines.

I was thinking its possible it was the cable, I switch the cable, still Lines. I am now worried I got a bad unit and I will have to send it back to dell, or something, its gonna be a huge hassel.

So i decide to hook it up to my dad's comp with his shitty Radeon 9000 and wamo it works... YES!!!! no wait... NOOO!!!!

So WTF I dont get why it isnt working, at minimum it should atleast be able to do the 1280x800 like my dad's ATI 9000 can do, makes me wonder if the DVI is busted in my laptop, I know it used to work. I am going to hook it up to my HDTV which is also DVI-D and see if it still works, glad I have a 4 year warranty on my XPS gen 2.

Despite your bad choice of title, you need a 7800 series nVidia card to display on the 30".

The 6800 doesn't have dual-link on the XPS Gen 2.

Your XPS G2 will work fine with a DTV @ 1920x1200, as that is within the DVI (single link) specification.

um, works on my dad's 9000 that is single link, I am getting no video on anything on my XPS gen 2, and it has a 7800 series. My XPS gen 2 is still working on the HDTV, I don't know what is up, at a minimum this thing should be able to do 1280x800.

BIOS? Lines in the BIOS?

That's a vid card issue.

Well I am going to try bringing it by to my old high school teacher's house (also has an xps gen 2) and see if it works on his with the 6800 ultra. See if its just a 7800 gtx problem, or maybe just an XPS gen 2 or what, this is so weird...

Wow i hope you get it working! Bad news is that dell will not wllow warranty transfers on there monitors which means you have no warranty what so ever if something does happen to it.

The Dellâ„¢ 3007WFP requires a DVI-D dual-link graphic card that supports WQXGA (2560x1600) resolution. The 3007WFP is optimized to work with Dellâ„¢ XPS 400 and 600 desktops, Dell Precisionâ„¢ Workstations (380, 470 and 670) and additional systems that support WQXGA.

As far as I knew only the desktop 7800 GTX and 7900 were the only cards that supported this feature. Aslo I believe that, edit:"certain", workstation cards do as well.

Depends on how nicer the seller is. I've sold a few monitors and I just contact Dell on behalf of the current owner.

Update:

Took the display to my friends house who lives 15 miles away, on his XPS gen 2 it did the same thing, however it did work at 1280x800, I figured out I can get 1280x800 atleast working with older drivers (on the display now).

The display worked flawless at 2560x1600 on my friends other laptop (macbook)... doh...

Seems to me the firmware thinks its dual link but the hardware isnt, this really sucks.

Oh well I guess I will try some more drivers and other stuff I would like to talk to anyone who got a 30 inch apple or 3007WFP working on their M170/XPS gen 2.

well here is a picture of when it was doing the lines. sometimes it does different lines, or it does it for a couple seconds then stops and goes black, weird.

Go cards in laptops dont support duall link, so you will only get 1280x800 or whatever the lower res is. Any 7800 series and all ATI x1000-x1900 series cards have dual link dvi plugs.

Where did you come up with that, I know there are laptops that support dual link DVI. According to NVIDIA's linux drivers my laptop is dual link, I will see if this display works in linux as soon as the next linux driver release comes out, i posted on the nvidia linux forum and one of the nvidia developers says my card should be dual-link and it should work with the new drivers, weird, weird.

Dell and nVidia both list the Dell model Go7800GTX as Dual-Link DVI capable. Where you get the idea that Go cards aren't Dual-Link?

If I may ask the OP: Are you running the latest BIOS revision? And did you happen to nvflash your 7800GTX? Try restoring the default nvidia firmware and updating to A05 BIOS. If you still have the exact same issue when attempting to push above 1280x800, then I would venture a guess at a bad DVI plug.

Try VGA-out at 1920x1200 and see if you get the same effect. (They have VGA-DVI inline adapters)
