I'm so chuffed. Decided to try Linux again- went through Ubuntu and MepisLite and then- thanks to recs on this site- gave pclinuxos a go. Only distro so far that flawlessly detected my ethernet broadband connection and made getting online a painless procedure. OK, still doesn't recognise my belkin wireless card, but since the machine is set up to dual boot win 2000 pro, that's not a major issue. I'm just happy that i've finally found a distro that lets me connect to broadband with the minimum of faffing about.
Incidentally, setting up the partitions and swap file through pclinux was a breeze in comparison to ubuntu, where i ended up having to set up a swap file through the command line.
next step: to work out how to install apps/ make sure that pclinux detects my usb drives and Kword can read my files!

But real hard to beat PCLinuxOS for a desktop.
" he said play with IT!"
