Connecting a laptop to a TV!

Hi there.

I plan on purchasing a new laptop and TV so that the two can be happy together I have some questions though!

The TV I plan to purchase will either be a 42" plasma or a 40" or so LCD flat panel. The resolution on the plasma will be 1024x768, while on the LCD it will be 1366x768. Both will have a PC input (VGA I believe, or is it called RGB? The analog one anyway lol). There is also the possibility that I could go the DVI -> HDMI route, but most TV manufacturer's don't suggest that. I think the analog route would be best...

Anways, on to the laptop decisions. Firstly, the laptop will be in the same room as the TV and will act as a desktop replacement. So the only moving around will be from the desk to the TV in the same room. Not much travelling involved. I figure a 17" would be ideal, but maybe a 15.4" would suffice. So, on to the questions!

1. Will the video/graphics of the laptop be important? There may be some gaming on it (along the lines of Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 and such, not terribly demanding). But if the resolution of the TV will only be 1024x768 would it, matter? 1366x768? Also, what specifically should I look for in regards to the video/graphics specs. I'm confused with all this "TV-Out" business. Some clarification would be nice...

2. I believe I would be using a VGA cable to connect the laptop to the TV, correct? What would be the length of this cable? Are there extenders available? I ask because I want to sit on the couch when watching the TV, not being constrained 1 foot from the screen...

3. I feel like I'm missing something. Is there anything else I should be aware of in regards to this whole HTPC-type set up?

4. SUGGESTIONS! What models would be good choices. Price as low as possible!

THANKS!

1. Yes. The better your video the more seamless the procedure. I find that on lower end laptops TV lags the unit and you won't be able to multitask, and sometimes not even do anything on it while the TV is using it.

2. S-Video is most common I believe.

2. If your TV has VGA/RGB in, definitely use that! Quality of RGB >>> S-vid.

I'd go with the LCD over the Plasma though. I've heard that Plasma's don't last very long. LCD should save you money in the long run.

Why would DVI > HDMI be a bad idea? I was thinking of doing that...
