dell had a little too much inventory on the M170's and is trying to unload it first before releasing the M1710.

So, can you buy one of them now?

Last night and this morning, I talked to two different Dell reps.

Both said it was officially released yesterday, but it is not yet available for sale.

My guess is they won't be taking orders until Monday/Tues timeframe.

roflmao yeah we are in the same boat. We want them, but we lose!

On a side note, what on earth is this Audigy capable of? Wasn't EAX HD the 5.0 version? Or was it the first one? Unsure...

Look at the 7900 gpu driver. 47mb? That's around twice the size of the Nvidia drivers I think. But have a look at the driver version: 84.29.

Dear Dell: If we are "in the know" enough to be calling you to order a machine, maybe you'd do well to fax us an order form (in lieu of some web setup) and let us be the first to order one! If we are interested enough to talk to you the second we think they are available, deal with us!

Ok now I can wake up. We need to know a lot more about that Audigy stuff.

I heard from a friend that the Audigy are really good. I am looking for more information on them

Yeah,yeah...
IMHO, something IS released when it IS released .

Probably not many of us cares that DELL has it SOMEWHERE, right ?

Well EAX HD refers to the entire lineup of EAX past I think version 2, and with Xifi they are up to version 5.0. They offer a "bargain basement" Audigy chip that does 5.1 and EAX HD, which doesn't look like much so I'm praying there is more to this onboard sound than that. If we could, *crosses fingers* have the Audigy2 ZS essentially built in and save our card port for say a good wireless 802.11n or esata or EVDO that would be much handier to the gamer on the go.

I'm eager for any more we learn on this one. Again, not that I won't buy one if its not what I hope for, but that I'm hoping for a lot

Is it possible the silver was just a prototype and it might come in black body with the red center section instead? Ok, that's probably not the case. Oh well.

Have to figure out how I'm cooling this thing and memory and stuff. Christmas in April

Yeah, the soundcard is an unexpected mystery...

How much fun we can have speculating!

So, my guess is more or less an Audigy 2ZS built in. I think they've learned that a large amount of the gamers buy the audigy anyway, so they engineered something in.

BUT: remaining questions:

* Does HD really mean "Intel HD audio"? If so, GOOD, because that means standardized drivers (and Linux support), 24-bit, and high quality!
* Does integrated mean on-board?
* Are any Dolby technologies supported?
* Will it affect battery life?

If Yes, Yes, Yes, and Not too much, then I'll be more than happy...

Yeah funny how a great feature can then generate lots of questions. I would hazard a guess that Audigy would be instead of the Intel HD audio. That's usually how it works. I'll choose the Audigy if its 2ZS equivalent myself I think just for the gaming and Directx acceleration.

I'm trying to figure out what other features could be in the higher end model to warrant what is a rather large base price difference. 256mb of add'l video ram and a sound chip don't seem to quite be the 700-800 difference, but maybe I'm just wrong. It seems like there are more features between the two than meet the eye currently. That makes me hopeful

Lots more questions however

It's the Sigmatel HD Audio solution (same as the 9400) with the Creative Labs software on it. It uses the Creative software to adds most (if not all)features of the Creative Labs cards to the sigmatel sound card. It works pretty well.

Ok I need a bit more translation. Software I would assume would be a bad thing in terms of sucking framerates to get sound affects, and worse lacking the Directsound acceleration that the Audigy does? If you are unsure I can go lookup the Sigmatel and do some research just busy atm myself.

Does this mean we get Dolby headphone on this?

What level of EAX does rise to? 1.0 to 5.0

Any idea what using it does to framerates? (another reason one can be happy for dual cores as there is a core to dedicate to things like this!)
Did some digging. Sigmatel is rather less than optimal on a gaming notebook...

http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2681

Lots of tests there. It mentions no EAX so that must be software as an add on to the Sigmatel, so I can only imagine that drives framerates even lower, though maybe less so on a dual core notebook. Oh well.

There's the bad news. Let's see if there is some light of goodness coming out of the 1710 yet.

Curious news regarding heat of 2gb SODIMMS as well as 1gb modules. Do be careful.
