Specifications XPS M1710 - Page 4

Maybe the reason Creative doesnt like Dolby is that the licensing fees are
reaaally expensive.

I dont really need any that fancy stuff on my comp. What I would like is
a high quality audio out (something else than the typical headphone jack).

Does anyone know what the XPS 1710 will look like on the outside? Is it still going to be the M170 or maybe a little bit difference of an outside appearance?

Until a few days ago, I didn't even consider Dolby for this machine... it was only after having heard about the Toshiba that I started wondering...

So yeah, it seems like a nice machine in any case... Difficult to get perfection.

Well yes, the fees must probably be pretty expensive. Still, the M2010 and at least two other laptops probably will have this included, so it shouldn't be impossible.

I am also only after a high-quality audio out. That's why I want to use the S/PDIF connector. Problem is I'll only get stereo sound from games using these chips... We need DDLive to get 5.1 sound over S/PDIF from games...

I used to be a huge fan of the docking port when I had an i8600. Just slide it in and BOOM everything was connected. I had to get used to life without it when I got the GEN2. Now, to be honest, I don't miss the docking station at all. I only connect a single USB cable (that leads to a hub), a power cord, and speaker cord. (I use wireless for LAN connectivity.)

According to the service information on the DCSE site....the M1710 XPS will support the DBay and DDock docking stations. Also, from the photos Dell had up (too bad I can't steal them) The XPS M1710 will be silver with black base and the LCD lid will have what appears to be a quicksnap cover....they had a picture with a red cover and one with a black. Looks pretty spiffy

This is EXACTLY what I'm wanting to hear!

So does this mean it looks like the current XPS?

I wouldn't yet.... cause even if you can order it on the 14th as rumored, it still won't be in your hands till mid may (as a guess).... so unless you don't mind not having a lappy for a month or more, I wouldn't sell my existing machine yet.

A DBay? Is that the extra option to add an additional 6 cell battery? Something that the M90 is missing? or is the DBay for something else?

Ok docking bay wishlist item check.

Dolby digital studio would be next.

Mid May is just fine - but it'll be a long wait as I check for shipping like so many here have done.

Along another line - does anyone know what the wireless upgrade is supposed to be after the 3945? I read somewhere you were supposed to be able to plug in 11n into these machines (1705 and other Yonah types)?

Here is the initial reply from my cousin who works for dell. It is kind of neat that she gets to be in meetings with Michael Dell. I will pry more for the details.

Its funny how far removed I am from the marketing side of the Dell business. For one thing, I know the products by their code names, not the marketing names. If you were to ask me what a "Zanzibar" notebook is and when it ships, I can tell you. : ) I think Zanzibar is an XPS that should be on the market in the next week. If you'd like, I can find the product features guide for it.
I just went to an Engineering meeting this week with Michael Dell. I haven't seen him at a meeting for about 5 years. He's really excited about purchasing Alienware. But, he didn't say whether or not were' going to produce products that would compete with Alienware. Although he did say they want to start selling better cutting edge technology and high end products, like $6 - $10K boxes. They've been focusing on low prices, now they want to shift to the latest technology and better quality. They will be offering different colored chassis options, like red and possibly airbrushed screen paintings. The 20.4" laptop you're talking about, I know it as "Greenland", has been in development for years. We're all hoping that crazy thing will ship soon so we don't have to work on it anymore. It weights 18 pounds and will be carried with a handle, like a briefcase. I think it's intended to be a portable gaming PC. I'm looking forward to hearing whether or not we'll get into tablet PCs.

Ill post more when I find more out!

I'm sorry, I was distracted when I posted. I meant the Dport replicator not the Dbay, the M90 nor the m1710 will have a Dbay, but you can put a DBay device in the DDock so you can do disc to disc copying with your Laptop.

That is the big mobile desktop thing that they were showing off at Cebit.
It is huge... not really a notebook.
