AVG and Avast are decent. Each is free.

I use Avast! (home edition.. thats the free one) and it is very nice and easy. Low system resource footprint as well.

I use AVG for like 5 years now. Tried Avast before but slowed my system down.

anti-vir doesn't have an outlook plugin in the free version.

AVG for me. Simple easy to use and works great.

One more vote for AVG!

AVG for me also. Haven't used Avast but I've heard good things about it.

Free for one year - eTrust Anti-Virus:

I have been using this for some time and am very happy with it.

new AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic for Windows 98/ME as well as for Windows NT/2000/XP free on our download page.

I have been using AntiVir (following 9 years of Norton) for past three months and really love it.

It has the best Detection Rate and Lightest Footprint of any Free and most paid antivirus.

Check the "please visit our support forum" on the site linked above for details, especially "Notifier".

AVG has been great for me.

Another vote for AVG here

Free? Avast but I certainly would recommend investing in a paid version like NOD 32 or Kaspersky. With all the crap out there now, getting the best protection is not a luxury....just my $0.02.

Ditto AVG. Often "paid" does not equal "best."

Often that is true but not when you consider an AntiVirus. Plenty of articles, tests and reviews have showned that. There's no free AV software that performs better then their paid counterparts....period. This has been true for quite some time now.

The problem I have with majority of paid AV software is the major bloat. Ive got AVG Free running just peachy on my 700mhz windows server without so much as a hiccup. Can't say the same for norton or mcafee on my 2ghz desktop machine.

That's so true that Norton and McAfee are resource hogs but a program like NOD 32 is one of the best out there and uses a very small amount of resources.

I tried NOD32, Norton, McAffe. Now all my family machines are protected with AVG, simple to use and effective.

Links below to just two different test/reviews and for the AntiVirus Company's like AVG, Avira and AVIRA (AntiVir)
that offer both paid as well as free versions and the AV Engines (and detection rates) are the same,
just more 'features' as well as 'free' versions are limited to personal use.
The test results will reveal that several 'Free' ones do better than most 'Paid' ones.

"Mega Antivirus Test"

There is more to consider than just 'Detection Rates', System Load as well as ease of use are important considerations as well.

EZ-Trust is likely the "easiest" and AntiVir has the lightest system load (also seems easy to me).

EZ-Trust (etrust by CA) does not show well on detection rate, but I have it on "Her" System,
periodic OnLine Scans (Kaspersky and Ewido) reveal it to always be clean.
