The test results will reveal that several 'Free' ones do better than most 'Paid' ones.

"Mega Antivirus Test"

There is more to consider than just 'Detection Rates', System Load as well as ease of use are important considerations as well.

EZ-Trust is likely the "easiest" and AntiVir has the lightest system load (also seems easy to me).

EZ-Trust (etrust by CA) does not show well on detection rate, but I have it on "Her" System,
periodic OnLine Scans (Kaspersky and Ewido) reveal it to always be clean.
While I agree with you on some points, AVG and AVAST in free or paid version are far from getting the results of Kaspersky or NOD 32. So ok...not all paid version are better but if you are looking for the best protection you will have to pay.

Of free antivirus progs, I have tried AVG, Avast and AntiVir, and find Antivir the best, though AVG is good too. The lastest issue (May) of Australian PC World picked AntiVir as the best of the freebees, too.
