Okay, I bought a pair of Altec Lansing ACS-56W speakers for $42 at http://www.compuplus.com/insidepage.php3?&id=1000418 and they work great!!! No more thumping noise coming from the hard drive in my 8887. All I did was enable SPDIF output in my bios and hooked up the speakers with included cord and away it went! $42 brand new!!! Can you believe it?

How do you get Windows to output its normal, everday sound to S/PDIF?

I have S/PDIF working with my Z-680 speakers in WinDVD on my 8886, but I don't know how to send everything to S/PDIF (like games, etc.)

Hm...

I'm not sure...all I did was enable the SPDIF in the bios and turned down the laptop speakers (they didn't mute when I plugged my cord into the spdif jack like they do when I plug a cable into the headphone jack) and turned up my SPDIF speakers and they worked fine. All sound was pumped through them...windows, games, windvd...I didn't have to change a thing. I'm using Windows XP Pro. In fact, when I went to look at the volume control for the SPDIF it was greyed out and I couldn't change the volume...which really isn't a big deal because I'd rather do that from the speakers anyway! Sorry I couldn't help you more

Well, you and InvestorGuy can get it to work, so I must just be trying too hard... I'll check it out again tonight when I get home.

I've got WinXP Pro also, so it should work ok.

Thanks!

Make sure you speaker options are set for 5.1 surround (under advanced you have the option of choosing your speaker setup). Also, in games, you should enable EAX in order to get 5.1 distinct channels. Let us know how it goes!

EAX

There are some games that I don't like the EAX on because it is too creepy I don't mind hearing things if they are in front or back of me or even on either side. However, it's rather unerving when I hear wails, cries, or even gunshots and they sound like they are coming from my basement...it's just plain freaky sometimes so I turn EAX off

Okay, I was being a dense knob before

S/PDIF does output the Windows environment sounds. COOL!!!

Now I just have to check out the full potential of my games!
