This reminds me that I need to replace my "crappy car"

It seems that the old Honda Civic HB is giving up the ghost, so it's time to move the Camry down to the duty of "beater car"

But... other than that I have a few nice ones myself. My pride and joys are the 1954 Jaguar XK 140 and 1956 Porsche Speedster.

Now I need something that is a bit more refined, but fun as well. The Lexus ES 300 is looking nice, but for some reason I keep getting drawn back to the Jaguar X-Type (anyone have experience with those by chance?)

Not true..you can get 325xi, 330xi, X3, and X5 which are all four-wheel drive....
I was checking their site when you posted that, lol.

Still... compared to the Lexus and Infiniti competitors it seems that the BMWs are a bit lacking in overall quality and creature comforts.

Hahahahaha lacking in overall quality... please go get some facts before making that claim, as BMW is easily one of the best-built cars. Creature-comforts... what do you want? My 3 series doesn't have everything a more expensive Lexus has, so look at 5 or 7 series.. but you wanted 4 wheel drive, so look at the X5. If you have the money, X5 4.8is. That will dominate all SUVs except Porsche. I think once you drive each, you'll know what I'm talking about when I say BMW has the best handling, which is ultimately what it comes down to, if you care at all about the performance of your car(not even racing, but handling, braking ability, the whole package). Infiniti's four-wheel drive cars include G35 sedan, which is a good value; QX56, and FX35/45. None will match BMW handling, according to everything I've read and know myself. If four-wheel drive is a must, look at Audi too.

Okies... how is this for a fact:

BMW managed to put a few models (particularly the 7 series) into the "worst" category for Consumer Reports, compared to Lexus and Infiniti, both of which scored much better.

Though... the BMW SUVs aren't too bad, but I am not in the market for one of those.

Looking cool and driving nice are one thing, but I want something more reliable on the whole, else I'd just buy a British-made luxury sedan.

yeah look how ugly that thing is, id have to say many of the true bmw enthusiast hate the new 7 series design, i being one of them. but im sure
bmw does produce a lot of nice cars, like the e46 m3 all in all i still stand by bmw, my first car ever and id have to say they are nice cars

I guess I'd have to disagree with CR then. My advice is to check out some message boards of die-hard fanatics and you'll learn about any major issues...most people don't experience any problems, but there is always some fraction that has problems. I just know I haven't had any. BMW maintenance program is excellent too. If you want reliability, get a Honda
