Developer dilemma

Well, with XP now able to boot on Apple hardware, this raises a particular question.

What will be the developing fallout from this? Will Adobe continue to put the resources into their Mac division to maintain OSX-specific software? They've already stated they will not be compiling a universal version of CS2, although Lightroom was initially released in beta form for the Mac only.

What about the smaller companies? Will they now try to cut monetary corners and only release a Windows version of their software, and assume people will simply reboot to run their app?

Will Microsoft discontinue Office for Mac in an attempt to force people into buying Windows to run their software, regardless of hardware preference? They've already discontinued support for their horrible Media Player for Mac (and also failed to update it before that to include support for their latest codec).

I know Apple will continue with their software production. I doubt you'll find Aperture in a Windows version, much like how you don't find Final Cut Pro in a Windows version. But what about the software-only companies?

An obvious problem now is the Mac gaming market. Already a small minority in the application group, where's the initiative to create OSX ports of their games? Look at this forum right now. Everyone's talking about buying a Macbook so they can boot into Windows and play a game.

I use a Mac because of the way applications run inside of the operating system. I don't use Windows. But by trying to please THAT market, are those who appreciate the OSX method going to get shortchanged? Something to think about, before you start rejoicing at Windows now being Apple-supported bootable on a Mac.

I don't think that will happen. The vast majority of people will not want to run windows- it's windows, not OSX, and so you don't get all the UNIX realted joys of OSX.

For this reason I suspect Adobe will release an intel version of their SW- photoshop works better ona mac.

just imagine the average user who wants to have windows to choose from on a mac... the system gradually bogs down w/ registry issues and spyware and becomes basically unusable (the most common issue i end up helping ppl w/in windows). as they alternate betweeen OSes it becomes glaringly apparent which is the more resilient and user-friendly OS. just MHO. ;-)
