HP DV8000 Questions

Hi all! First Post!

A couple of questions for the DV8000 owners out there.

1. Can you add a second internal hard drive to the laptop if you have purchased it with only one installed? Presumably the space for the second drive is empty. Is the necessary adaptor in place, or must it be ordered seperately?

2. Is the audio out port an SPDIF or other digital out?

The info I received from HP via telephone was hopeless, and their online brochure etc is thin on details. In Australia we can't configure a purchase, we just get a choice of 3 DV8xxx models configured by HP in their wisdom?!

Cheers!

1. yes you can add another, plug and play so to speak.

2. yes it is SPDIF built into the headphone output jack.

7200 Rpm?

BALTIMOREDSMGUY -

I noticed that you have a 7200rpm drive - did you add it after buying, and if so, where did you get it? thanks

So can anyone confirm that has recieved a dv8000t /z with (1) drive installed that the controller is "there", and the "hard drive "frame.

Let me ask you guys this:
"Who else here would feel like it's a rip-off to purchase this model that is purposely built to take (2) hard drives and expects when the time comes to be able to purchase a "bare" drive, remove the (3) screws holding on the hard drive cover, Lossen the (2) hard drive frame retention screws(page 5.7), remove the frame.... then install the drive to the drive frame (4 screws), slide hd/frame in, re-install the (2) hard drive frame screws, install the cover, the three cover screws, install the battery, power the unit on, go into the bios... and then be able to see /format /use that "second" drive?...

Without having to hunt down and purchase the hard drive "frame"? is there?

I would assume this "frame" is ONLY available from HP, that it is not a "generic" frame that 3rd party vendors who sell hard drives are going to be able to supply at a reasonable cost.

(I can see the following happening a year or so from now... I'm sorry sir, but that frame which cost HP less than a penny is going to run you XYZ, it's a special order item, and seeing how the dv8000 series was only made for a year and then they changed the design and they're not compatible with any other model we've had a real hard time sourcing those 8000 hard drive frames . They've been on backorder for the past 9 months - That being said we do have a select "few" we have put up for auction.. the current price is $125, plus shipping.. This offer only being good if you purchase the hard drive from us of course.)

I have owned numerous HP/Compaq laptops. Most of the time spare parts for their laptops are plentiful and go down with time. Several companies make their bread and butter selling OEM HP/Compaq spare parts. However, having ordered and returned the dv8000z I had an opportunity to reflect on the single drive configuration, and when I ordered the dv8000t I opted for the dual 80GB. The easy way to defeat this is to check to see if you need the frame and if so buy it now.

Order it from who?

I would hope that HP offers the HD upgrade.

Thanks to everyone for replying! I had a chance to play with one at a computer store yesterday, and was very impressed.

The bios didn't seem to have any way to select which hard drive to boot from (2 drive model I saw) but I can always use a boot manager - probably faster anyway.

Thanks all!

At the time of my purchase these were the options for the HD from HP availible on 3/9/06:

80GB 5400 $0
100GB 5400 $75
100GB 7200 $135
160GB 5400 (2x 80 GB) $175
200GB 5400 (2x 100GB) $275

I pulled the cover on the drive bay: here is a link to the drive that was in there
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/7k100/7k100.htm (HTS721010G9SA00)
also, there are two bays as I said before, one is occupied(bay #1) and one is not(bay #2). Bay two is ready for an additional drive, plug and play. I might buy another Hitachi drive that I have in bay one for extra storage when I run out of space

There is no OS on the second drive, therefore there is no option to boot from it.

I've only had mine for two weeks now. Does mine take two hard drives? See sig.

I notice when I look at the "computer" properties, it appears to have two hd with the second having the restore stuff on it. I can't look right now as I'm on my desktop in my main computer room.

what you are seeing is actually one HD that is "Split" into two.

Look in DISK MANAGEMENT.... that will show physical discs, and partitions.

Go to HP, download the owners , Or better yet the Service and Maintance manual.... Or go to the custom build a PC page, see if a second hard drive is an option...

dv8000z and dv8000t list a 2nd drive.... in the maintance and service manual...

You might also find info here: http://www.partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main

You could also (GASP!!!!) Call HP and ask them..

I just looked at the spec sheet and it's only showing a 80 gig drive for a HP Pavilion dv8210us... Of course that's how they build, ship that model.... so it may indeed take a second drive, and it not be listed...

You might want to look around on the partsurfer link above.... The HP site and go to the custom build option, find a machine like yours that uses the same cpu, video card... and then see if that model gives an option for a 2nd drive... (dv8000z)????? See if the motherboard is th same part number for example... If it's the same part number there is a good chance everything's already there. (MINUS the Hard drive bracket of course)

Here's on last idea... turn off the laptop, turn upside down, remove battery, A/C power.... Remove the access panel to the Hard drive bay and LOOK to see if the connectors, the interface is there for a second drive. On my dv8000t it's (3) screws...

PS: When I entered the part number of the motherboard 417029-001, a model came up (dv8100), when I clicked on that a dv8113cl came up that DOES show an option for a 2nd drive.
