Palm Pilot

My daughter would like a palm pilot for keeping track of her appointments in college. The thing runs about 100 bucks. Does anyone have any experience in these laptop substitute's. Is there anything that would do more (like browse the web on an 802.11b/g wireless) for a little more money? Any ideas? Maybe places to go for better prices? Is the palm pilot a good device itself?

There are many palm type pcs (pocketpcs, etc) now that have wireless, and bluetooth, as well as many other features for more money. I dunno if you will find anything in the $100 area with a browser and wi-fi built in, but some popular, more inclusive devices are the Dell Axim (which I owned and hated), and the HP iPaq. I'm sure there are also plam's that have browsers and wifi built in. I never really researched them much because I wan interested mainly in Windows Mobile OS devices.

Thanks for the response. I've seen something on "blackberrys" anyone familiar with these? What are these priced at?

I have a Palm TX, wich comes with integrated wi-fi and it kicks ass.. However its a bit pricey compared to your $100 mark (they go for $250-$300). It has a great screen, pretty fast, wifi bluetooth... for the price you wont get anything nearly as good as it..

check out this palm tx review:

I dont know anything about the blackberries, but google showed a lot of reviews, so you could try and do that..

Blackberry is a PDA with integrated phone. Check ebay or your mobile phone service provider for the cost of one.

palms are dead, blackberry's are peices of crap (i support them at the help desk) black berry's are only good for corporate use when yo have to have email (can handle up to 10 diffrent accounts on BES server) pocket PC's are vastly superior and if your daughter is in college, it would be WAY easier with an all in one, dont buy a phone/ipod/camera/pda/etc just have this

or this

Phone (GSM Unbranded Retail) = $300 - $400CAD for a good one with bluetooth (uncrippled)
PDA Dell Axim, ipaq, etc (a good one) = $300-$400CAD
Ipod nano 2GB-4GB = $250-350CAD
Cheap camera 1-2mp (for party pics and stuff) = $100=150CAD

add all that up its $950 - $1300,

how much is a pda phone? $650CAD it has

Dualcore 200MHz cpu - 524MHz Xscale
128-256ROM
64-128RAM
expandable memory (also hot swappable) i have a 2GB in mine but you can get a 4GB for $150
GSM Unlocked w/ EDGE - 3G Ready
Bluetooth 2.0
Wifi B AND G (thats right G WIFI, first pda to have it)
2.0MP Camera (its not bad at ALL, check out the picture at the bottom)
the new JasJam has a 2.1MP Camera
can play MP4/Xvid DVDs/Movies/TV Shows
ANY Audio format (mp3, aac, ogg, etc)
can act as a universal translator
Bluetooth GPS ready (gps is $150CAD)
can record high quality audio for WEEKS on a 4GB card (goes strait to MP3)
need the phone off for class? you can turn on and off ANY wifi radio and have the PDA still on. you can even turn the pda 100% off and not use ANY battery power and not lose all your data since its using ROM, most palms will lose all the info when the batteries die (same goes for the older Pocket PC's)
5-8hrs Talk time
200-260Hrs Standby
can record video for Hours
Video conference,
VOIP Capable
can remote onto PC's or even remotly control PC's
Rings tones? yep, Midi, Wav, MP3 even MUsic video ring tones...
themes? pocketpcthemes.com
wallaper? any Jpg image
the PIM is outlook... so that means, calendar, alarms, reminders, tasks, notes, voice notes, email, txt mail, hotmail EVERYTHING
MSN messenger? yep
ICQ? yep
yahoo? yep
all instant messengers? yep
can pair with any bluetooth headset
bluetooth external keyboard for typing really fast
can even pair with a bluetooth mouse
text to speech
speech to text
voice dialing
bluetooth voice dialing
seperate ring tones for every contact
picture caller id
picture contacts
contacts are also managed in outlook, can be imported from hotmail

now what phone / palm / ipod can do all that for cheaper? most people dont think about adding the total cost of everything they carry (electronics) $650-700 is NOT that much for this device

pr50wner, are you a pocketpc seller?

Before I decided to buy my TX, I seriously considered getting something to integrate everything including my phone...

The problem (with me) is that I dont take good care of my cell phone... I treat it like crap, and if it wasnt durable i'd probably have broke it a long time ago.. And to me even though that pic looks good, its still nowhere as good as my Canon SD200 (old, but VERY thin and takes great pics)

So to me its still not the time to buy a phone/pda/mp3 player/camera just yet, I think I'll give it a few more years to get the quality I want in one small package..
